Contigo has announced a recall of about 5.7 million of its kids’ water bottles over choking fears.

In a statement published online, Contigo said they put consumer safety first and, in partnership with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is voluntarily recalling the Contigo® Kids Cleanable Water Bottle.

“Take them away from children”

The bottles were sold through U.S. stores – and online through various websites for Australian consumers – from April 2018 through February 7, 2020. And they came in three sizes (385ml, 420ml and 590ml) and four colours (solid colour, graphics, stainless steel and stainless steel solid).

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and the replacement lids provided in the previous recall,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said. “Take them away from children.”

Contigo said they received 427 reports about the spout detaching and 27 of those spouts were found in children’s mouths.

What to do

While no injuries have been reported, Contigo said they are encouraging consumers to find out if they have an affected water bottle lid and order a free replacement product.

This isn’t the first time the drink bottles have been recalled. This new instance includes the replacement lids that were sent out in the first recall, which was issued in August 2019.

Consumers who received replacement lids in the previous recall should contact Contigo for the new water bottle.

The bottles have the recall number 20-074, which is printed on the rim and along the bottom.
