Here’s how to claim the IVF fertility testing rebate

For some couples falling pregnant naturally isn’t possible, and IVF is their only option. Still, the cost of IVF and fertility testing only adds to the stress and heartbreak that comes with infertility.

“Long, expensive and emotionally difficult”

Last month, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard announced a $42 million package over four years to “dramatically” reduce out-of-pocket expenses for IVF services.

“Fertility treatment can be a long, expensive and emotionally difficult process, so I hope that this extra support will give women more choices and ease the financial burden,” he said.

$500 rebate

Under this commitment, women can apply for a $500 rebate to go towards out of pocket expenses for pre-IVF fertility tests. While the tests can be for male or female fertility, only a woman can submit an application.

Tests include:

  • AMH
  • pelvic ultrasound
  • ovulation test
  • semen analysis

NSW Service is administering the rebate. To be eligible, you must be a NSW resident and have paid for tests from 1 October 2019.  Your specialist will complete the ‘Pre-IVF Fertility Testing Rebate’ form with you and answer any questions you have about your eligibility. Unfortunately, your general practitioner can’t complete the form.

Government-supported IVF clinics

Additionally, the government is expanding the availability of NSW Government supported IVF clinics at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Westmead Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Women, as a result they hope to provide lower-cost IVF treatments for around 6,000 women over four years.

And a fertility preservation service will be set up at The Royal Hospital for Women in partnership with the University of NSW for cancer patients.
