Why do people often catch colds when travelling?

Normally the mucus layer that covers the nasal tissues remains moist and breathed in viruses, bacteria and irritants are trapped and carried to the back of the throat, swallowed and then destroyed by the stomach’s acids.

However, cooler temperatures and lower humidity experienced in airplane cabins or air-conditioned environments are factors that can affect how the nose normally functions. The cooler temperatures slow down mucus transportation in the nose and the lower humidity causes nasal dryness.
