Once you start feeding your baby solids, a good high chair is essential! Here is what to look for to determine which high chair is right for you.

Tray table

Some high chairs sit up against the table while others have a tray table that you can pop your baby’s food on when they can start feeding themselves. If the tray table is removable, it gives you greater flexibility in how you use the high chair. With the tray table attached you can bring the high chair into the kitchen so they can eat while you cook dinner for the rest of the family, or you can remove the tray table, and they can join the family at the table.

Safety features

A harness in a high chair is an essential safety feature. Some high chairs offer a five-point harness while others are a three-point harness. Which one you choose will depend on your baby and how active they are. If you have a climber or escape artist, a five-point harness is probably a good idea!

If a high chair has wheels or casters, make sure that they can be locked to prevent the high chair sliding around.

Don’t forget to look for sturdy designs and be careful of moving parts or spots where your baby could get their hand or fingers caught.

Longevity and durability

While some high chairs are designed just for babies, others can be used until your child weighs 50kg or more. These chairs are designed with longevity in mind and convert to a regular chair that they can use for many years to come. The price for these chairs is much higher, but you do get a product that will last the test of time. Consider the quality you want in a chair and how you will use it in your home.

Ease of cleaning

High chairs are one of those things that are going to get messy! You blink and all of a sudden your baby has spread their sweet potato puree from one side of their high chair tray table to the other. You want a high chair that is easy to clean! Look for easy to wipe surfaces and minimal nooks and crannies that food can get caught in. If the high chair has a fabric seat also be sure that this can be removed for washing.

Other features

There are so many high chairs on the market, all with different features. Here are a few of the popular features that you may like to consider:

  • Fold up for compact storage – ideal if you live in a small home and want to be able to pack away the high chair between meals
  • A high chair on wheels gives you the freedom to move it easily from room to room
  • Some high chairs are height adjustable to allow for different table heights, or they may come with various attachments so the high chair can double as a rocker at a lower height. Extra features like this are ideal for small spaces.
