The list really is endless – but for just a few examples, there’s Easter Parade Peekaboo, a board book for the youngest readers, Easter Croc, a fun pop-up book, and Don’t Push the Button: An Easter Surprise, for kids two and up. There are also Easter books featuring classic characters, such as Grug and His First Easter, Clifford’s Happy Easter, and Beatrix Potter’s Easter Egg Hunt! with Peter Rabbit.

Why should rabbits have all the fun? This Aussie alternative is made from super soft non-allergenic synthetic fur, making this cuddly little fellow a favourite all year round.

Purebaby bunny and rattle

Purebaby’s soft rattle makes a terrific gift for a young baby.

Another super cute option from Purebaby is their soft cotton velour bunny toy that has an inbuilt rattle – and very lovely floppy ears.

 Tomy Hide & Squeak Eggs

Eggs don’t have to be chocolate to be fun! These eggs crack open to reveal colourful chicks that cheep when pressed by little hands. Each egg only fits into one spot in the carton, making it a puzzle too.

Easter craft

Go beyond the traditional Easter hat or mask – you’ll find a variety of inexpensive arts and crafts kits for toddlers and young kids at shops like Kmart. Check out their Easter decoration kit, plaster egg painting kit, or the Easter activity book.

Bunnykins sets

The much loved Bunnykins series makes a perfect Easter gift for babies and toddlers. The kids will love the sweet little illustrations, and you’ll love that the plates, bowls and cups are microwave and dishwasher safe.

Playgro hooded towel

Suitable for newborns through to toddlers, this 100% cotton hooded towel will keep your little bunny snug and cosy at bathtime.

No matter what you end up gifting your loved ones this Easter, whether it’s a sweet treat or one of these ideas, enjoy your time together!

Biostime Infant Probiotics with Vitamin D

For the first time in Australia, Biostime is launching their Infant Probiotics with Vitamin D. Biostime is, the No. 1 brand of paediatric probiotic supplements in the world. *

This specifically formulated probiotic-prebiotic combination is designed to support digestive and immune function in healthy infants.

H&H Global Marketing Director, Severine Brichard, said the Biostime Australia launch is in response to the genuine need from Australian consumers for premium nutrition for children.

As a global leader in paediatric nutrition, Biostime recognises the changing and complex world of parenting, especially when it comes to nutrition. This is why we have put decades of research into our formulations to ensure we deliver a high-quality organic toddler milk that helps support the nutritional needs of the next generation.

“We searched the world looking for the most premium source of high-quality organic milk and the search led to Normandy, France. Biostime milk is sourced from organic farms within the Isigny Sainte-Mere dairy cooperative, located in the heart of Normandy, France. For centuries, the region’s dairy farmers have produced exceptionally fine milk, earning a well-established reputation for quality. The unique natural ecosystem of the Normandy region is truly special. Fresh water from the Cotentin peninsula is combined with the salty seawater of the channel to create rich clay soils which upon grows nutritious green grass. Our dairy cows roam and graze freely on these luscious pastures, ensuring their milk is rich in minerals and high in natural dairy fat.

“Today, the Isigny site is recognised as one of the most advanced in the world with over 250 quality checks from milk to jar, ensuring nutritional validation. Driven by our desire to be close to nature, the products are formulated with organic cream, organic vegetable oils and are 100% palm oil free,” said Brichard.

“Understandably, Australian parents only want the best for their children and are looking for products that are founded upon nature, but still contain nutrition through scientifically verified ingredients. We want to give your toddler a great start to life which is why our product is proudly certified organic in both Australia and Europe. This means all ingredients are sourced without the use of pesticides, herbicides, hormones or antibiotics.

“Biostime remains committed to leading the future of paediatric nutrition, combining the power of science and nature with an uncompromising commitment to quality and safety,” said Brichard.

How to choose supplements for mums

About supplements and vitamins for mum

We recommend you take the advice of your GP as we are not medical professionals.

Us mums are not exactly known for taking care of ourselves. We tend to run around after everyone else, meeting everyone else’s needs, and forget to prioritise our own health and wellbeing.

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given as a mother is simple: “Put on your own oxygen mask first.” That means you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else.

Ideally, we would get all our essential nutrients from eating a full and balanced diet. However between morning sickness (ie all day sickness!) and food aversions during pregnant, and then general busyness of life after baby is born, sometimes that’s just not possible.

Which might mean looking at supplements and vitamins for mums, and working out if they’re right for you.

Folate/folic acid (vitamin B9)

Folate is so important and an essential nutrient. Firstly, folate and folic acid are two different forms of vitamin B9. Folate is naturally occurring and folic acid is a synthetic form of folate. (The terms folate and folic acid are often used interchangeably, so we thought we’d just clear up that little confusion.)

The reason this particular essential nutrient is so important is because low levels of vitamin B9 have been linked to birth abnormalities. That’s why it’s recommended to take a folate/folic acid supplement as soon as you start trying to conceive or even for a few months before, because during those first few formative weeks you may not be aware that you’re pregnant.

Pregnancy multivitamins

You don’t have to take folate/folic acid on it’s own. Pregnancy multivitamins should contain folate/folic acid, as well as other essential nutrients – it’s worth checking the packaging just to be sure. Pregnancy multivitamins come in various forms, including tablets, chewables, powders and liquids (this is handy especially if your pregnancy has given you an excessively sensitive gag reflex – it’s no good swallowing a tablet only to bring it back up two seconds later).

Supplements and vitamins for pregnancy

There are also other supplements and vitamins for pregnant mums that can be really helpful to your overall health. There are supplements that can help with painful cramping that can occur during pregnancy – these supplements often contain ingredients like magnesium and potassium. Some supplements claim to help with morning sickness, and others are supposed to help prepare you for labour, such as product containing raspberry leaf.

Be aware if you’re already taking any other multivitamins to check that you’re not double dosing on anything – overdosing, even on essential nutrients, can potentially be harmful. If you’re unsure, check with your doctor or another healthcare professional.

Breastfeeding supplements

There are many different types of supplements and vitamins for breastfeeding. Some are in the form of breastfeeding multivitamins, while others are specific vitamins and supplements recommended for breastfeeding.

Otherwise, there are various natural supplements and foods that are often recommended to boost milk supply. These substances are called galacologues, meaning they promote lactation. These breastfeeding supplements often contain ingredients like fenugreek, flax seed, brewer’s yeast, fennel seeds and even oats. They come in all sorts of forms from tablets and powders to lactation cookies. While these products may help, if you do have any concerns at all about your milk supply it’s best to talk to your midwife, child’s health nurse or a lactation consultant as soon as possible.

Other supplements and vitamins for mums

Other supplements and vitamins for mums include probiotics, which can help with gut health. Various types of herbal remedies, such as teas, can also help settle morning sickness.

There are also single nutrient supplements for mums who may have been diagnosed by their doctor with certain deficiencies, for example iodine or iron.

However, as with anything regarding your health, it’s always best to consult a healthcare professional to work out what vitamins and supplements are right for you.

How to choose baby skin care products

If you are looking for the best baby skin care products for your baby, use the above baby skin care comparison chart to search by:

Key baby skin care information

About baby skin care

It’s important to take care of your baby’s soft and delicate skin. Baby’s skin is more sensitive than adult skin because it’s a lot thinner, especially newborns and premature babies, so it’s important to be really careful about taking care of your baby’s precious skin.

So when introducing new products – even products marketed as being for babies, or for sensitive skin – it’s a good idea to do a small test patch on your baby’s skin before completely covering your baby in that product, just in case they have some kind of reaction to that product.

Baby wash and soaps

Keeping baby squeaky clean gets harder as they get older and more mobile – babies and toddlers have a knack for getting themselves extremely dirty in a very short amount of time! (Though even newborns can be difficult to keep clean between poo-splosions and constant vomiting.)

It’s a personal choice whether you want to use baby soap or if you just want to rinse your baby off with plain water. If you decide to use baby wash or baby soap, there is a huge variety to choose from.

Baby hair care

While many babies don’t really have much in the way of hair to care for, some babies have luscious little locks and may need a bit of baby shampoo to help keep their hair clean. You may not need to specifically baby shampoo, as many baby washes and soaps can also be used on baby’s hair as well, or you may just want to rinse baby’s hair off with water.

You may want to buy your baby a super soft baby brush for gently detangling their hair, as their scalp may be too fragile and sensitive for a regular adult brush.

Baby lotions, oils and moisturisers

Your baby’s skin is more prone to drying than adult skin, so they may benefit from regularly moisturising their skin. Applying baby lotion, baby oil or moisturisers to your baby’s skin can also be a soothing and comforting experience for baby and yourself. Baby massage can be great for your baby’s sleep routine, as well as their skin care routine.

Eczema and rashes

Rashes can be a sign of illness, allergies or irritation to products or substances your baby has come into contact with, so if you’re ever concerned about rashes on your baby’s skin it’s a good idea to contact a healthcare professional immediately. They may also have eczema, a skin condition that should be diagnosed and treated under the guidance of your baby’s doctor.

Most babies will get nappy rash or irritated skin from time to time, and there are some great products that can help soothe and relieve your baby’s skin. These products include moisturisers, nappy creams and other specially formulated lotions and creams.

How to choose a baby carrier

If you are looking for the best baby carrier for your baby, use the above baby carrier comparison chart to search by:

Key baby carrier information

About baby carriers

Using a baby carrier, or “babywearing”, is a beautiful way to bond with your baby. Babywearing can also be extremely practical: being able to carry baby with your hands free is great for quick trips, grocery shopping, or just being able to hold baby around the house and still get stuff done.

There are so many different types and brands of carriers though, so it can be a little overwhelming when choosing the right carrier for your family.

When looking for a baby carrier you want to find something that is going to be comfortable and easy for you to use. Also, you want a baby carrier that is going to meet your specific needs, so look at whether they’re suitable for newborns, the weight limit and also what carry positions the baby carrier can offer.

Soft structured carriers

Soft structured carriers, or buckle carriers, are the most popular carrier because they’re generally considered easier to use. Many offer a range of carrying positions, including forward facing, back or hip positions. Some may be suitable for newborns through to toddlers or even preschool age.

Slings

Ring slings or buckle slings are a piece of fabric that goes diagonally across your body and then can be adjusted to fit snugly. Slings look really simple, though correctly positioning your baby upright, high and tight, might be a little trickier than it seems. They are, however, very quick and easy to use when you’re confident positioning your baby correctly. It’s important even in these slings that baby is still positioned in an upright position with their chest and tummy against your body.

Stretchy wraps

Stretchy wraps are great for newborns and younger babies, though they do start to drag down and feel heavy with a bigger baby. When worn correctly they can be very comfortable, because they’re made of a length of soft, stretchy fabric. They also can feel lighter and more breathable, so they’re great for summer and warmer climates. They can take some practice to wrap correctly.

Woven wraps

Woven wraps require the most skill to wear, but with lots of practice and patience they are often considered the most comfortable and versatile baby carrier. Woven wraps can be worn in a variety of different ways to suit different ages and stages. It’s worth trying out different ways of wrapping to find what feels most comfortable, and easiest, for the parent.

Structured backpack carriers

Structured backpack carriers are usually used for hiking or long walks, rather than quick trips or around the house. They’re generally not suitable for newborns, but can carry babies from the time they can sit upright through to preschoolers or beyond. One advantage to using a structured backpack carrier is that you securely buckle your baby or child into the carrier before you pick it up, so this might feel easier for parents who are nervous about putting their baby into a carrier wrong.

Babywearing safety

No matter what carrier you choose, it’s important to make sure your baby is going to be safe at all times. Firstly, regularly check your carrier for signs of wear and tear. Also be wary of buying baby carriers online from overseas or unknown sources, because not all carriers are made to Australian safety standards.

It’s worth checking out the “TICKS” guide to ensure a safe babywearing position.

How to choose a baby bath or bathtime accessory

If you are looking for the best baby bath or bathtime accessory for your baby, use the above baby bath comparison chart to search by:

Key baby bath or bathtime accessory information

About baby baths and bathtime accessories

There are lots of different baby baths and baby time accessories available to make bath time an easier and more enjoyable experience for both you and your baby.

Baby baths

Whether or not you need a dedicated bath will depend on your family and also your bathroom set up. Not every house has a bath, or even a suitable sink for washing your baby. You can buy baby baths that you simply place on the floor and kneel down to bath your baby. Alternatively you can buy baths on stands, which are better for your back, and also have space to store all your other baby bath time accessories and products.

Bath seats

While bath seats can be incredibly helpful to give you one free hand, especially with a squirmy baby, keep in mind that you cannot leave baby unattended in a bath seat, no matter how stable or secure they seem.

There are lots of different styles of bath seats to suit a range of ages and needs. Some are soft hammocks or cushions to gently support your new baby; others are upright for your busy baby to sit up and splash around in the water.

Baby bath dams or dividers

This is a great option if you just want to use your existing bathtub, but don’t want to fill it with water every time for just one small baby! Baby bath dams provide a waterproof seal so you only have to fill a smaller section of your bath. These are also good for saving time when filling up the bath.

Shower high chair

While it can be very convenient to just bring baby into the shower with you, wet and soapy babies can be incredibly slippery to hold! You might want to use a bath seat or a regular high chair in the shower, or you can buy specially designed shower high chairs for your baby. These are also a good option for someone concerned about their back and mobility as you can wash your baby while standing upright.

How to choose a dummy

Key dummy Information

About dummies

Many parents end up offering their baby a dummy at some stage (whether they planned to or not!). It’s an entirely personal decision to choose to use a dummy with your baby.

There are so many different dummies to choose from, and some babies will need to try a few different dummies before you find the right size, shape and texture that suits them. Also be aware that some babies will not take a dummy, no matter which dummies you try, while others do just like to have that extra sucking time to soothe and comfort themselves.

Silicone, latex or rubber dummies

Dummy shape: cherry vs orthodontic

Cherry-shaped dummies are round, while orthodontic-shaped dummies are rounded on one side and flattened on the other. Orthodontic dummies are designed to encourage baby to suck on the dummy the same way they would suck a nipple while breastfeeding. They’re also designed to cause less issues with baby’s teeth.

Some babies do have a preference for the more traditional rounded cherry-shaped dummies, and you might need to try out both to see which one baby will take.

Other factors to consider when choosing a dummy

Dummy chains

Dummy chains can be so useful when out and about with baby, especially if they’re old enough to start to pop their own dummy out of their mouth. It can be frustrating constantly losing or washing dummies because they get thrown on the floor! Be aware dummy chains should be short so baby can’t get them tangled around their neck, and also shouldn’t be worn to bed. Also check the dummy chain regularly for signs of wear, as they can break apart and be a choking hazard.

Key Baby Capsule Information

About baby capsules

Infant car capsules

Infant car capsules are a rear-facing car seat that is able to be taken in and out of the car easily and carried by a handle.

Infant car capsules come in two standard sizes: Type A1 and Type A2. Type A1 infant car capsules are designed for babies up to a large six-month-old, whereas Type A2 infant car capsules are designed for babies up to a large 12-month-old.

The size of the infant car capsule you choose is worth weighing up in relation to what type of car seat you’re planning to move your baby into when they outgrow their capsule.

Travel systems

One of the main advantages of using an infant car capsule is the ability to use them with a compatible pram as a complete travel system. It’s extremely convenient being able to take the baby from the car into the pram without having to take them out of their seat. This means some babies might be able to continue their nap undisturbed by the transfer.

Some babies just dislike the process of being buckled and unbuckled from their car seat to their pram, so being in an infant car capsule will be less disturbing for them. Even if they’re not necessarily asleep for the transfer.

Just be aware that prams will only be compatible with a select range of capsules, and will need to be connected to the pram with capsule adapters that are sold separately. Some prams will only be paired with the same brand of the capsule.

It’s a good idea to buy your pram, infant car capsule, and the adapters to connect them together at the same time to ensure they’re all compatible.

Other features to look for

Adjustable shoulder straps: Some capsules have easily adjustable shoulder straps that simply slide up and down into position by squeezing a lever. Otherwise, you’ll need to rethread the shoulder straps to reposition them as your baby grows.

Sunshade: Having a sunshade on the capsule is especially useful when using it as the seat for your pram.

Easy installation: It’s a good idea to have your capsule professionally installed – at least for the first time, to ensure you know what it looks like when fitted correctly. However, some infant car capsules have features to make getting the perfect fit easier – look for things like:

How to choose a nappy bag

Key nappy bag information

About nappy bags

Nappy bags, like handbags, are such a personal choice about what size, type, style and aesthetics you prefer. Given you could be carrying around your nappy bag for many years it’s worth getting one that you’re truly happy with!

Choosing the right size

Nappy bags come in so many different sizes, from convenient little nappy wallets to very large bags that could carry enough for an overnight trip. Working out how big or small you need your bag to be isn’t just about making sure you can fit everything you need inside it – also consider whether it’ll fit your pram, or how comfortable you feel carrying it when it’s fully loaded.

How many pockets do you need?

Working out whether you need a lot of pockets, or maybe only a few pockets, depends on how likely you are to be very organised with your bag. If you know you’ll have your bag well organised with an individual place for every item you’re planning to bring, then a bag with a lot of pockets and compartments makes sense. But if you’re maybe a bit less precise with how you organise items, lots of pockets might be more messy and fussy.

Nappy wallets

These nappy bags have a built in change mat, which is just fantastic if you’re often out and about where there isn’t necessarily a change table. They’re usually quite compact but can still hold a few nappies, wipes and a couple of small changing items like nappy creams. Nappy wallets are great for quick trips, or even putting inside a larger nappy bag.

Backpack nappy bags

Backpacks as handbags are definitely on trend at the moment, and backpack nappy bag are also quite popular. They’re great because you can carry a lot more on your back than you can just carry on your arm. Using a backpack as a nappy bag makes a lot of sense if you can’t fit everything you need into the basket of your pram, or if you’re planning to babywear.

Regular bag as a nappy bag

You don’t have to buy a “nappy bag” as your nappy bag. Though specially designed nappy bags usually include features like insulated bottle holders and change mats, and are often lined with easy-to-clean waterproof materials, you can just buy a regular bag if you can’t find a nappy bag that appeals to you. Satchels, messenger bags and backpacks make great nappy bags as well.

How to choose a cot

Key cots information

About cots

When it’s time to set up a nursery one of the first things people think of is the cot. What most new parents don’t realise is there is quite a bit of variety when it comes to cots.

Where will your baby sleep?

Red Nose Australia (formerly known as Sids and Kids) recommends that babies room share with their parents for at least the first six to 12 months. If you’re wanting your baby to sleep in your room initially, the first thing to look at is what size infant sleep space will actually fit in your room, as many bedrooms won’t fit a full sized cot beside the adult bed.

This is where a bassinet comes in handy, because they’re smaller and can fit into most bedrooms. Another option to help squeeze a cot into a smaller space is opting for a “sidecar” style of cot or bassinet. They’re designed to be pressed right up against the adult bed, which also makes checking on and feeding your baby a little more convenient through the night.

Convertible cots

Many cots can easily convert from a regular sized cot to a toddler bed by removing one or more of the cot walls so your toddler can get in and out of their bed themselves. One reason parents transfer their child from a cot to a toddler bed is because their child is starting to try to climb over the edge of the cot. This is obviously quite dangerous, so having the option to just take away the edge – and taking away that risk – is extremely helpful.

There are also some convertible cots that start off bassinet sized, then with some adjustments, and a larger mattress, they grow to the size of a regular cot. From there they become a toddler bed. Some of them can even continue their life cycle as a daybed or couch so they can be used even once your bub is in a regular bed.

Cot sizes

There are two basic sizes for cots.  The standard is a 60cm x 120cm cot – this is the size that the vast majority of cot mattresses, sheets and other bedding are designed to fit. You can also get a larger cot, called a Boori Large Cot – they are 77cm x 133cm, so they are notably larger in size.

Getting a larger cot can be an advantage if you’re planning to use the cot as a toddler bed later one. That extra large space means you’ll have a bit more time before needing to upgrade to a regular bed for your child. One downside is you’ll have less variety in sheets and bedding, and also because it’s a specialised size the bedding you buy for it will likely be more expensive.

Cot safety

The Red Nose website is a great resource for information for safely setting up your baby’s sleep space and advice on how and where your baby should sleep. It’s well worth familiarising yourself with the latest information and recommendations for SID safety.
