About supplements and vitamins for mum

We recommend you take the advice of your GP as we are not medical professionals.

Us mums are not exactly known for taking care of ourselves. We tend to run around after everyone else, meeting everyone else’s needs, and forget to prioritise our own health and wellbeing.

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given as a mother is simple: “Put on your own oxygen mask first.” That means you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else.

Ideally, we would get all our essential nutrients from eating a full and balanced diet. However between morning sickness (ie all day sickness!) and food aversions during pregnant, and then general busyness of life after baby is born, sometimes that’s just not possible.

Which might mean looking at supplements and vitamins for mums, and working out if they’re right for you.

Folate/folic acid (vitamin B9)

Folate is so important and an essential nutrient. Firstly, folate and folic acid are two different forms of vitamin B9. Folate is naturally occurring and folic acid is a synthetic form of folate. (The terms folate and folic acid are often used interchangeably, so we thought we’d just clear up that little confusion.)

The reason this particular essential nutrient is so important is because low levels of vitamin B9 have been linked to birth abnormalities. That’s why it’s recommended to take a folate/folic acid supplement as soon as you start trying to conceive or even for a few months before, because during those first few formative weeks you may not be aware that you’re pregnant.

Pregnancy multivitamins

You don’t have to take folate/folic acid on its own. Pregnancy multivitamins should contain folate/folic acid, as well as other essential nutrients – it’s worth checking the packaging just to be sure. Pregnancy multivitamins come in various forms, including tablets, chewables, powders and liquids (this is handy especially if your pregnancy has given you an excessively sensitive gag reflex – it’s no good swallowing a tablet only to bring it back up two seconds later).

Supplements and vitamins for pregnancy

There are also other supplements and vitamins for pregnant mums that can be really helpful to your overall health. There are supplements that can help with painful cramping that can occur during pregnancy – these supplements often contain ingredients like magnesium and potassium. Some supplements claim to help with morning sickness, and others are supposed to help prepare you for labour, such as a product containing raspberry leaf.

Be aware if you’re already taking any other multivitamins to check that you’re not double dosing on anything – overdosing, even on essential nutrients, can potentially be harmful. If you’re unsure, check with your doctor or another healthcare professional.

Breastfeeding supplements

There are many different types of supplements and vitamins for breastfeeding. Some are in the form of breastfeeding multivitamins, while others are specific vitamins and supplements recommended for breastfeeding.

Otherwise, there are various natural supplements and foods that are often recommended to boost milk supply. These substances are called galactagogues, meaning they promote lactation. These breastfeeding supplements often contain ingredients like fenugreek, flaxseed, brewer’s yeast, fennel seeds and even oats. They come in all sorts of forms from tablets and powders to lactation cookies. While these products may help, if you do have any concerns at all about your milk supply it’s best to talk to your midwife, child’s health nurse or a lactation consultant as soon as possible.

Other supplements and vitamins for mums

Other supplements and vitamins for mums include probiotics, which can help with gut health. Various types of herbal remedies, such as teas, can also help settle morning sickness.

There are also single nutrient supplements for mums who may have been diagnosed by their doctor with certain deficiencies, for example, iodine or iron.

However, as with anything regarding your health, it’s always best to consult a healthcare professional to work out what vitamins and supplements are right for you.
