Priceless video of little boy discovering he’ll be a big brother: “I’m so happy!”

Considering the challenges of recent COVID times, it’s a delight to see something that warms your heart and brings on the happy tears. This TikTok clip of a little boy discovering he will soon have a sibling does exactly that and went absolutely viral.

“We’re having a baby??”

The little boy whose name is Sammy has long hoped for a baby brother or sister. The video captures the moment when his parents tell him the good news and give him a t-shirt, which includes the words “big bro” on the front.

When Sammy realises what’s going on, his ecstatic reaction ticks all the emotional boxes and you simply cannot look away. He is just so thrilled, hugging his mother and thanking her over and over again. “Oh my god! Thank you so much, I’m so happy,” he cries through joyous tears.

“I’m so excited,” he says. “I can’t believe it”

He then picks up the t-shirt and says, “I love this.”

The plan is for Sammy to wear the t-shirt when they see his grandparents – who will no doubt be equally surprised and happy to hear the long-awaited news.

The back-story

The mother has added captions to the video, talking about Sammy’s long time desire for a sibling and her difficulties in providing one. Tugging even harder on the heartstrings, the words show that the news is not just music to Sammy’s ears, but for his parents as well.

“Sammy has been asking for a sibling ever since he found out what that was,” his mother wrote. “He wished on birthday candles and asked Santa for a sibling.”

The mother continues to explain that due to health issues, it just wasn’t happening until she finally decided to have a gastric bypass to improve their chances. “After a year and a half after my surgery our dreams came true,” she wrote. “He’s going to be such a good big brother.”

“This is the BEST thing on TikTok”

The clip has been played over two million times, shared nearly 18,000 time and received over 4000 likes. And it’s not hard to see why. Sammy is just so adorable and viewers could not help but be drawn in by his heart-breaking reaction.

Many even found themselves spontaneously crying at odd times and places and left comments such as, “It’s the “THANK YOU SO MUCH” that got me in tears at 8.07am” and “Great so I’m crying at the drive-thru line at MacDonald’s” and also, “Not me balling on my couch in the middle of the day.”

Others were taken by Sammy’s lovely nature and ‘big brother’ potential. “Omg what an amazing kid!!!!!!” wrote one follower. “He is going to be such a good brother!!!”

“This is genuinely the sweetest thing I’ve seen,” said another viewer. “You can tell he’s a good kid with a good heart, wrote yet another.

The overwhelmingly positive comments continue, as followers cannot believe how happy Sammy is about his upcoming sibling. Even his parents seemed taken by his reaction.

“Why are you laughing like it’s a joke?” he asks them.

“It’s not a joke,” his mum assures him. “We just so happy that you’re happy.”

I think the rest of us all feel the same.

20 non-binary names, previously only used for girls

Non-binary names have increased in popularity and are set to dominate in 2022, particularly for boys. It certainly makes choosing a baby name easier if you can have one name that suits either gender, particularly before the birth.

However, while boys’ names have been commonly used for girls, rarely does it go the other way around (how many boys do you know with a girl name?).

But times are changing and according to Nameberry, we’ll see the rising popularity of non-binary names that were previously only ever considered choices for baby girls.

Boys names for girls

Choosing a boys’ name for a girl is certainly not new. Names such as Frankie, James, Dylan and Avery have long been popular choices for girls – just think of Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Blake Lively. But what about girls’ names being used for a boy? According to Nameberry, out of the top 100 boy names back in 2015 in Australia, not a single one was originally thought to be a traditional girls’ name.

The changing trend

Now, looking at the coming baby name trends for 2022, Nameberry has highlighted the growing popularity of nonbinary names for boys, many of which were only ever considered as girls’ names. People are opting for more feminine choices, with favourites ranging from goddess names like Artemis and Echo, to nature names such as Sunny, Winter and Wren and unisex names that have always been more popular for girls like Blair, Laurie and Sasha.

Here are 20 non-binary names that are growing in popularity but were usually only ever selected for girls.

Mum’s ‘lasagne’ bed-making hack: “This tip has saved me so much time!”

Accidents happen. Particularly when you have a baby. And it usually involves drenched cot sheets, soaking mattresses and wet pyjamas – usually in the middle of the night (which is the last thing you want to deal with!).

One TikTok mum has offered a solution for such situations with her simple yet practical ‘lasagne’ style bed-making hack – and the video went absolutely viral.

Layering like a lasagne

Shelby is a TikToking mum who offers handy tips for parents, and this idea is certainly one to consider – especially for those new to the parenting game. “Mamas, I don’t care how old your kids are, this tip has saved me SO much time,” she says on the video.

Shelby then demonstrated how she makes the bed, layering it alternatively with waterproof and regular sheets. “When you’re making your baby’s bed, layer the waterproof pad and sheets like lasagne,” she continues. “That way, if there is an accident you have an extra set on the bed ready to go.”

@sparklegigglesmile If you aren’t making your kids beds this way- you neeeeed to #momhack #firsttimeparents #registrymusthaves ♬ Mama Said – Lukas Graham

“That’s brilliant!”

The post struck a chord with many parents, attracting enormous attention with over 26,500 likes and nearly 2000 shares.

Many parents already followed a similar technique, posting comments like “Yep! I do it with all of my kids. Just in case they get sick or accidents.” Another said, “I thought everyone did this naturally,” while another said, “I’ve known this for years.”

However for many, it was a new concept and sounded like a great idea, with excited comments such as, “THIS IS BRILLIANT”, “Genius” and “Love this”.

Some were even thrilled with the lasagne technique, despite the fact that they no longer needed to worry about it. “I shoulda known that 5 babies ago…” wrote a parent. “This makes me wanna have another baby JUST so I can make that sheet lasagna,” posted another. “Seriously brilliant,” said yet another. “Wish I had thought of this 24 years ago.”

One for any age

As Shelby says, it doesn’t matter how old your child is. This super handy tip is suitable for any age – because let’s face it, bedwetting accidents can happen for many years to come. And not just bedwetting. “My 2nd child was a drooler,” posted one parent. “I used this layering technique. It saved the aggravation of constantly changing sheets.”

Another said, “Still doing it with my kids. Its been a lifesaver for those accidental spills and stomach flu.”

For whatever reason, this bed-making hack might prove useful. Okay, so followers with older kids in their 20s had a giggle about the “I don’t care how old your kids are” comment, but still, you never know what’s around the corner, especially in the middle of the night and it’s best to be prepared.

As Shelby wrote on the post, “If you aren’t making your kids beds this way: you neeeeed to.”

Help! How do I survive the cluster feeds?

When you start breastfeeding, you may have those moments (or hours) where your newborn fusses at night and wants to constantly feed over just a few hours. This is commonly known as cluster feeding and often happens during those early breastfeeding days. It can come as quite a surprise and leave you feeling drained and exhausted. However knowing what to expect and how to best prepare for those times can make a huge difference to your cluster feeding experience.

Have a game plan

Cluster feeding is very normal behaviour for your newborn. There is no particular reason for it happening. Some experts say baby is after more milk and the constant feeding may boost supply. Whatever it is, there’s not much you can do but go with it. According to midwife Tylah McConnell, it’s important to understand that milk production is highest between one and five in the morning, which is when cluster feeding often takes place. “We do always have to see this as the night shift,” she says. “So it’s not necessarily doing anything to baby or changing baby, but rather changing how we view this whole time.” For Tylah, this means being prepared for what is to come, just as you would with any night shift work. “I know when I was working night shifts, it’s definitely something I had a game plan for,” she says.

Early to bed

Cluster feeding during the night is tiring for and you might feel you can never catch up on those lost hours of shut-eye. Tylah strongly recommends that parents try to go to sleep a little earlier before those nights of feeding begin to keep those energy levels up. “Try and get to bed at 7pm to 8pm to get a three or four hour block before the cluster feeding has started,” she says. “And then you can get that next block after that feeding period.”

Have a good dinner

It may seem like a simple solution, but eating well before you go into that cluster feeding phase at night makes a huge difference. “The biggest thing is making sure that you’ve eaten beforehand, that you’ve had a nutritious meal, because you’ll be surprised how much that impacts your energy,” says Tylah. “I think with a new baby a lot of the times, especially breastfeeding women will forget to eat and then that’ll make them feel so tired and depleted.”

Calm baby down

One thing that can help with an unsettled baby at night is to create a peaceful evening routine by giving baby a bath and keeping everything nice and calm. “You can even play some music, give some skin to skin to really try and settle baby and show they’re safe, calm and relaxed,” says Tylah.

Find some friends

While you’re up all night during those cluster feeds, it can be reassuring to find others going through a similar experience so you know you’re not alone. “It can be really helpful to follow some sort of breastfeeding groups on Facebook, and Instagram and feel like you’re not the only one up all night with your baby,” says Tylah.

Have a good time

Another way to get through those night cluster feeds is to create an enjoyable environment for yourself, finding simple joys and pleasures within having to be awake. You might set out something to eat and a glass of water, or have things around you that make you feel good and relaxed such as aromatherapy, music playing, a book to read or podcasts ready to listen to. “Maybe you want to have a nice TV show to watch overnight when you’re doing the feeding or some music to listen to and some snacks and water nearby, everything set up so it’s a bit more of a pleasant experience,” says Tylah.

5 ways to prepare for breastfeeding

Your baby is due any minute and you can’t wait for the birth. But what about breastfeeding? For first time mums, the thought of breastfeeding may seem a little daunting, but with a little preparation, it doesn’t have to be anything to stress about.

During a recent Facebook Live with TMBTV, brought to you by Multi-Mam Compresses, we talked to midwife Tylah McConnell about five easy ways to get yourself ready for breastfeeding.

Watch our chat all about breastfeeding (story continues below).

1. Get to know your breasts

According to Midwife Tylah, one of the best ways to prepare for breastfeeding is to familiarise yourself with your breasts – and an excellent way to do this is through expressing antenatally.

“There’s not really anything that can quite simulate the newborn and their true suction power,” she says. “However, I would say antenatally expressing is going to be your biggest help.” As well as helping you to learn how it might feel, this gives you the chance to start looking after your breasts, keeping them moisturised and testing any products you’ve bought, such as nipple creams or compresses.

“Trying them all out and getting really familiar with them, so that you’re not having to use them for the first time when you’re exhausted and have a crying baby, is probably your best bet,” says Midwife Tylah.

2. Get everyone onboard

One thing you will need when you start breastfeeding is support. Midwife Tylah suggests making sure that people around you understand the breastfeeding journey and are ready with words of encouragement. It’s also a good idea for partners to take on certain jobs when you start feeding your baby. “I think the biggest thing is helping out with the nappy changes, because they generally always will come right before or right after breastfeed,” says Midwife Tylah. “So partners, assigning yourself that duty is one big way to allow a mum to get comfortable, get in a good position, maybe quickly go to the toilet have a cup of tea before that breastfeed.”

Midwife Tylah also suggests that partners can also help by familiarising themselves with the process of properly latching on by watching Youtube videos or reading articles. “Even just knowing the resources available, like to be able to call Australian Breastfeeding Association, to be able to pop to the chemist and buy a few things to ease a mother’s comfort,” she says.

3. Stock up on pain relief

Another way to prepare for your breastfeeding journey is to have pain relief and comfort ready and waiting for sore breasts and nipples during those early and often challenging days.

“Have things to suit your nipples, like the Multi-Mam Compresses,” says Midwife Tylah. “Make sure you have paracetamol on hand, make sure you have some ice packs in the fridge or cabbage leaves, which are definitely something traditionally used.”

4. Do your research

Stocking up on knowledge about breastfeeding beforehand can be invaluable. Depending on how you learn best, you may want to attend classes, read books or listen to podcasts and audiobooks. “Reading some breastfeeding books, watching videos really familiarising yourself with the process, empowering yourself with knowledge is a really great thing to do,” says Midwife Tylah.

5. Talk to a lactation expert

It might be worth booking in to see a lactation consultant to discuss what is going to happen when you start breastfeeding. They’re readily available and can help you prepare for what lies ahead. “A lot of hospitals will have lactation consultants,” says Midwife Tylah. “But they run their own businesses, so I’d have a look at their reviews, ask other mums, the best is that word of mouth recommendation. And then even have a bit of a meeting with them and say, ‘Look, can I have a five minute phone call to see if we’re going to be a right fit?’ – sort of like a job interview and making sure that feel comfortable with them.”

Mum’s 6.3kg baby surprise: “I would do it all over again if I had to”

Cary and Tim Patonai were expecting their third child, and had already been told their baby was going to be unusually big, possibly weighing 6.25kg.

This was news enough: the average weight for a newborn baby is approximately 3.4kg, and anywhere between 2.49kg and 4.5kg is considered a normal weight.

So you can imagine their reaction when their baby boy, Finnley, arrived at a massive 6.37kg.

The couple are already parents to Devlen, 10, and Everett, 2, who were born at 3.72kg and 5.04kg respectively. “But Finnley took the lead,” Cary told Fox News. Meanwhile, the doctor, who delivered all three babies, said that Finnley was the biggest he had delivered in 27 years.

“He was so big plus I had almost double the amniotic fluid, so to say I had a big baby belly and that I was absolutely completely uncomfortable isn’t enough,” Cary said in the interview. “However, I would do it all over again if I had to, to get this blessing.”

A surprising birth

Cary was scheduled for a C-section at 38 weeks, on October 5th, however it rapidly got moved forward when her waters broke the day before, just as she was being weighed at her last appointment. Later that day, at the Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona, Cary gave birth to Finnley.

The baby boy had to spend eight days in the NICU, which was a challenge for Cary. Due to a blood clotting disorder and fibroids, she had previously experienced 19 miscarriages. “I knew it was for a good cause and he was in excellent care, but it still was extremely hard for me to emotionally handle,” she said.

A (not so) little celebrity

Finnley and his extraordinary size proved a hit, not only with the doctor who delivered him, but with most of the hospital staff. “Finnley was a little celebrity at the hospital,” said Cary. “Nurses and doctors were non-stop talking about him. He is quite tall too at 23.75 inches (60cm).”

“As soon as they pulled him out, they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s huge!’” she said, according to The Sun. “Everybody was freaking out, like, ‘I’ve never seen a baby that big, I can’t believe it.’ So perfect and round in every way. He’s definitely my squishy little honey bear.”

The hospital had to put in a special order for bigger nappies and the family had to go out and buy bigger clothes as nothing would fit him. Cary and Tim had stocked up on clothes for a baby aged zero to three months, however Finnley jumped straight into clothes for a six to nine-month-old. “I wanted him to fit in the clothes we had saved from his other two brothers,” Cary said. “But everything we had was entirely too small.”

Finnley’s size may have been more than they bargained for, but his parents are just so thrilled to meet him and to finally be a family of five. “He is such a good sweet baby,” said Cary. “I am so grateful everything ended on such a great positive side.”

3 signs your breastfed baby is getting enough milk

When you start breastfeeding there’s so much to think about, and it can take a while for everything to fall into place. And once you’ve got the hang of it, your baby has successfully latched on and seems to be feeding, how do you know if they’re getting enough milk?

During a recent Facebook live chat with midwife Tylah McConnell, brought to you Multi-Mam Compresses, we discussed three very definite signs that your baby is getting plenty of milk.

Watch our chat all about breastfeeding (story continues below).

1. Your baby is super relaxed

Tylah says that one of the best signs that your baby is getting enough milk is that they will appear calm and relaxed, often referred to as ‘milk drunk’, after a feed. “If a baby has had enough, they will get sleepy and they will lose suction off the breast,” she says. However, you still need to make sure – sometimes babies appear sleepy but aren’t completely finished. “They’ll sort of pretend to fall asleep but if you try and unlatch them, they’ll start sucking again, and this is the sign they’re not done,” says Tylah. “But if they sort of unlatched by themselves, this is a great sign.”

2. What goes in, always comes out

Another sign that baby is getting enough milk is their output – after all, what goes in, certainly comes out the other end. But it’s not so much about your baby’s poos than how many wees they do. “Poos aren’t necessarily as significant to worry about,” says Tylah. “We’d like baby to be doing them, but we don’t track them as much.” Breastfed babies can have runny bowel motions that are mustard-yellow in colour, sometimes green or orange, but they may not have a dirty nappy every day.

What is more important when it comes to how much breast milk your baby is drinking, is the amount of wees they’re doing each day, and the colour of them (they should be pale yellow). “So we say day one – one wee, day two – two wees, and so on,” says Tylah. “And you get up to about day six, then you should be continually getting that six to eight wees a day.” This translates into approximately six to eight wet cloth nappies or five to seven disposable nappies in 24 hours.

3. Your baby is gaining weight

Another excellent sign that your baby is getting enough milk is that they are putting on weight. Your healthcare professional will weigh baby on day three or four and then again at one week and two weeks. According to Tylah, after your baby’s initial weight loss at day four, they should gain approximately 20 to 30 grams a day. “That’s a good sign that baby’s getting enough,” she says.

At the end of the day, every baby is different and if you have any concerns about breastfeeding your little one, contact the Australian Breastfeeding Association or talk to your GP, midwife or family healthcare nurse.

Mum went for baby no. 3 – and got quintuplets: “I was so shocked”

A couple with two boys decided to go for a third child, with the hope of having a little girl. Well, they got their girl – or rather, four of them, as they had quintuplets!

Megan and Joshua Hulen from Minot, North Dakota, already had sons Jacob, 7, and Matthew, 2, but decided to try for a girl.

As Megan has polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), she doesn’t ovulate regularly, so had used fertility drugs and IUI to fall pregnant in the past.

So imagine her and Joshua’s surprise when they discovered she was naturally pregnant without even getting around to IUI. “I started to feel really weird and I thought, surely there’s no way I could be pregnant because I never actually ovulated on my own,” Megan reported in an interview with The Sun. “But the one time I did, we found out we were pregnant, and that was a surprise enough in itself.”

How many heartbeats?

Of course, that wasn’t the end of the story. “We found out that we were having five babies, and nothing could have prepared us for that,” she said.

“I was so shocked – the ultrasound technician worried they were hurting me because I was shaking. I said ‘I’m shaking because you’ve told me I’m having five babies!’”

Megan was so thrown by the news that she needed to be alone to process it. “After the ultrasound I told my husband I couldn’t go home because I needed time to freak out away from the kids,” she reported. “So we went to his office and I sat in the corner and cried for about an hour.”

Megan had learnt to remain calm in times of stress after the birth of her second son, who was born with Nager syndrome and had spent three months in the NICU. Even so, this pregnancy was very different form her previous two. “There were a lot of differences from being pregnant with one and with five. I couldn’t vacuum the carpet without needing to take a break,” she said. “Standing in front of the mirror to put my makeup on I would become too winded or too tired from holding the weight up and would need to sit down.”

Speedy births

When the doctors noticed a jump in Megan’s blood pressure at 32 weeks, she was admitted to hospital. She then gave birth to her five babies via c-section: Allison, Adam, Madison, Emma and Chloe. But after all the hard work of carrying her brood, Megan couldn’t believe how quickly and easily the birth unfolded. “The birth was not what I expected it to be,” she said. “I was so shocked because the babies were all born within four minutes of each other. It was boom boom boom and all the babies were out.”

In fact, it took longer to stitch Megan up than it did to for her to birth five babies.

Amazing recovery

What was even more surprising was Megan’s speedy recovery. She was discharged within three days of the birth and only needed pain medication for about a week and half. The babies also had no issues, but as they were born early at 32 weeks, they stayed in NICU for three weeks. “The doctors were just as surprised as we were,” Megan said.

Once the babies were delivered, however, the extra workload soon become apparent. She and Joshua had little rest in the first three days, as the feeds were taking up to three hours. And laundry became a full time job of its own. “I had anticipated and prepared for the amount of laundry I would be doing, but it’s even more so than I expected,” said Megan.

But at the end of the day, the couple could not be happier to be back home, despite their sudden surprise family of six kids. “Life with the quints is chaotic but it’s a good chaos,” said Megan. “We’re just so happy to have everybody under the same roof.”

And babies can only breathe through their nose, but they can’t actually blow their own nose. Parents need safe, easy and effective products to clear noses and manage symptoms. Two essential products for every Australian family are Snotty Boss Nasal Aspirator and Jumper Infrared Thermometer. Snotty Boss is a motorised “snot sucker” which effectively clears the nose so little ones can breathe, feed and sleep better. When the snot is removed, it also means the virus is expelling from the body, which aids a quicker recovery. The Infrared Thermometer gives fast and accurate temperature measurements, via the forehead or ear. Put your trust in products that make your parenting journey easier.
