About baby cold remedies

No parent wants to see their baby sick, and the common cold is no exception. Babies haven’t had time to build up their immune system, so they can catch colds more easily. Unfortunately, colds are usually viral and can’t be treated with antibiotics. What you can do, though, is try to make them more comfortable. Don’t worry, your baby’s cold should get better in a week to 10 days.

Treating a baby’s cold

Even though there isn’t a cure for the common cold, there are a couple of things that can help.

The Raising Children Network says it’s essential to keep your baby’s fluids up. For babies under six months, offer extra breastfeeds or bottles. And if your baby is over six months, continue feeding as usual but offer extra clear liquids, like water.

If your baby has a fever, is in pain and over one-month-old, you can offer paracetamol. Make sure you read the label for the recommended dose. Ibuprofen can be given to children three months and over. Do not give children aspirin.

Saline nose spray

Saline nasal drops may help with breathing while your little one is feeding. Read the packet carefully and don’t administer for more than a few days without consulting your doctor. Alternatively, a nasal aspirator can work to remove mucus and snot from the baby’s nose.

Humidifiers

Humidifiers add moisture back into the air which may help to ease congestion – make sure you opt for one with cool-mist and follow the device’s cleaning instructions.

When to see a doctor

Pregnancy Birth & Baby says to seek urgent medical advice if your baby displays the following symptoms:

  • a persistent cough
  • breathlessness or difficulty breathing
  • a high fever (see a doctor straight away for any fever in a baby less than three months)
  • a bad cough
  • bluish or very pale skin
  • inability or unwillingness to feed
  • drowsiness
  • isn’t drinking
  • vomiting
  • is pale and sleepy
  • has a rash that doesn’t disappear if you hold a glass against it
