When to start wearing maternity clothes
Maternity clothes are a personal choice. While some women choose to upgrade their wardrobe, others will try and make do with what they’ve got (which can also be code for raiding their partner’s closet).
For those on the maternity wear bandwagon, when you start is up to you. The good news is that many women can continue wearing their normal clothes for the first three months of their pregnancy. However, signs it might be time to upgrade include, not being able to button up your jeans, tops that can’t be buttoned up – or really just whenever it feels comfortable for you to do so.
What maternity clothes do you actually need
When purchasing the bare essentials for pregnancy, the following items are a good idea to have on hand:
- maternity underwear
- maternity bra
- maternity jeans
- slip-on shoes
- leggings
- stretchy over-sized tops
For everything else, it’s possible to make do using things like a belly band or an extender kit for your jeans. Don’t forget your partner’s trackies and t-shirts, jumpers and so on.
Choosing the right maternity bra
A maternity bra provides some extra comfort while pregnant and when nursing. Your breasts will start to prepare for breastfeeding early on during pregnancy with all changes finishing around 16 weeks; the perfect time to shop for bras – if you want. There are a few different types of maternity bras to choose from. However, it’s recommended that pregnant women avoid underwire bras.

What to look for when buying maternity clothes
Stretch factor – Check the fabric and its ability to stretch.
Sheerness – So you’ve found something with stretchy fabric. Just make sure it doesn’t go see-through once you’ve got it on.
Ruching – Buying clothes with ruching means they can grow with you, making them last that extra bit longer.
Nursing features – If you plan on breastfeeding, think about clothes that can continue to support you when you start nursing.
