Nursery chair types

  • Nursing chair – a nursing chair is a specially designed chair that supports mothers while they feed their babies.
  • Rocking chair – a rocking chair provides movement while nursing a baby, which some find soothing.
  • Glider and ottoman – while a rocking chair moves on an arc, a glider nursing chair moves forward and backwards. Choosing a glider over a rocking chair is a good idea if you’re worried about little fingers and toes getting trapped underneath. It’s common for a glider to be paired with an ottoman too.

What should you look for in a nursing chair

Placement

It can be hard to know where you’ll want to sit while feeding your baby until they’re here, but it’s a good idea to place your nursery chair somewhere that you’ll get the most use out of it.

Putting your nursing chair in the nursery makes sense, but maybe your bedroom would be better for those long night feeds. Popping it in the lounge room is great if you want to nurse and watch TV or stay where all the household action happens. Just make sure there’s plenty of space for people to walk past you (there’s nothing worse than an elbow bump while feeding).

Size

Measure the space you plan on using your chair, keeping in mind that rocking chairs and gliders need extra room. If you’re planning on using an ottoman, that will require more space too.

If you’re looking for the best nursing chair for twins, you’re going to need something broader, like the Valco Baby Zelda Glider. A wider chair is also great for reading to siblings; everyone can snuggle up together.

Comfort

Can you get out of it? Can you breastfeed comfortably in it? These are just a couple of questions to ask yourself before buying a nursery chair.

When shopping for a nursery chair, spend time testing them out while keeping the following in mind.

  • Your height – a deep chair might be more challenging for someone shorter to get out of. Alternatively, a low chair can be problematic for tall parents.
  • Armrests – do you need them and if you do, are they comfortable? Also, check and see if they’re the right height for your arms while feeding your baby.
  • Back support. If you’re looking for the best nursing chair for back support, you might want something a little firmer. One Tell Me Baby reviewer said the Valco Baby Seville Glider offered excellent lower back support.
