Blackmores Pregnancy & Breast-Feeding Gold Elevit Pregnancy Multivitamin

When you are trying to conceive or are pregnant, the list of things that you need to do (and not do!) to ensure a healthy pregnancy can feel overwhelming. While you are navigating this new world (or bringing a new baby into the family), one of the things at the top of your list is probably picking the right supplement.

There are so many options when it comes to choosing prenatal vitamins. The decision on which is best can be stressful and will always be a personal decision based on what is right for you. We recommend talking through supplements with a trusted healthcare professional, but to help we have compared two of the top sellers: Blackmores Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Gold and Elevit Pregnancy Multivitamin.

Blackmores Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Gold

Product overview

Blackmores Pregnancy & Breast-Feeding Gold includes 20 important nutrients for both you and your baby, such as folic acid, iodine and vitamin D3. The tablets also have omega-3 DHA, which helps support the development of your baby’s brain, eyesight and nervous system. While constipation can be an issue when taking iron supplements, these tablets are designed to not have as much of an impact on the bowels.

Features

Key ingredient summary:

  • 500 microgram of folic acid
  • 150 microgram of iodine
  • Lower constipation iron
  • Odourless and concentrated fish oil

Price

$29.99 (60 tablets), $49.99 (120 tablets) or $71.49 (180 tablets)

Pros

Many of our TMB mums love the Blackmores Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Gold tablets and note that they are cheaper than Elevit and other brands on the market. Lots of our mums reported that these helped with constipation and didn’t make them feel ill, which is quite common with some supplements, particularly with people who are experiencing nausea and morning sickness.

Cons

Some of our TMB mums note that the tablets are quite large and hard to swallow. You also need to take two of these a day with meals.

Example review

These vitamins were great for pregnancy and postnatal. I tried these after getting constipation from another brand and they were great. When I started taking them my constipation started to ease straight away. The only thing I didn’t like was with these ones you need to take them twice a day and I was always forgetting the second dose.”

Elevit Pregnancy Multivitamin Blackmores Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Gold

Elevit Pregnancy Multivitamin

Product overview

Elevit Pregnancy Multivitamin has been designed for women who are trying to conceive, or who are already pregnant or breastfeeding. The tablets help build up nutrients that will support the healthy development of your baby throughout pregnancy and help support your body with essential vitamins and minerals while breastfeeding.

Features

Key ingredient summary:

  • 800 microgram of folic acid
  • 220 microgram of iodine
  • 60 mg of elemental iron
  • 18 mg of Vitamin B3 (nicotinamide)

Price

$28.49 for 30 tablets

Pros

Elevit is a trusted product with the highest level of folic acid and iron of any pregnancy multivitamin, plus a high level of iodine. Many of our TMB mums have used Elevit from pre-conception through to breastfeeding for all of their pregnancies and found it to be a great supplement for their needs. They also like Elevit as it contains all the vitamins and minerals they are looking for in one tablet.

Cons

Elevit is more expensive than Blackmores (though lookout for specials at big retailers like Chemist Warehouse), and some of our mums noted that (similarly to Blackmores) the tablets are large and can be difficult to swallow.

The tablets also made some people nauseous and may be best taken with food subject to your doctor’s advice. Some of our mums also noted that the tablets made them constipated, but this will always be depending on your individual body’s response to the vitamins.

Example review

“I took Elevit with both my pregnancies. I started a few months before getting pregnant. It is recommended as the best with more of all the good stuff in it then other vitamins on the market. When I first started them they made me feel a little blah but within a week I was fine and back to normal. I didn’t have too much of an issue with constipation. The tablets are on the big side but a good shape to make swallowing easy. Can be expensive, I suggest looking out for them on sale.”

Summary

The supplement that you take will be dependent on your individual circumstances. The decision is personal for you and how you are feeling. Both Blackmores and Elevit are great options, with folic acid, iodine and iron to support the development of a healthy baby.

We recommend that you talk to your doctor to help make the right decision for you.
