A breastfeeding pillow can be your best friend while you are breastfeeding, giving your back and arms a much-needed rest! Here’s what to look for to make the decision about which breastfeeding pillow is best for you.

Read baby feeding pillow reviews.

Washable cover

Babies can be messy and given how much you use your breastfeeding pillow, it can cop a lot of that mess in the form of baby vomit and leaky nappies. Such is mum life! Look for a pillow that has a washable cover so you can keep it hygienic and clean.

Ideally, you want the cover to be waterproof to prevent anything from leaking through to the pillow, or you need to be able to wash the pillow itself. When you have a young baby, ease of washing is a huge factor in the decision-making process!

Curved shape

Choosing a breastfeeding pillow that curves to the shape of your body will not only make breastfeeding more comfortable for you – but it also means your baby won’t move around while feeding.

Some breastfeeding pillows come in a half-moon shape while others are ‘peanut’ shaped. They work better than a regular-shaped pillow because there is less fussing and moving the pillow around to find a comfortable position.

Size and storage space

Another factor to consider is the amount of storage space you have available. Where will you store the pillow when it isn’t in use? If you are tight on space, can it double as a play space for your baby or another use? Also, consider the weight of the breastfeeding pillow, as you will have to lift it while holding onto your baby.

Ergonomic design

Using a breastfeeding pillow is about making breastfeeding as easy and comfortable as possible. Sitting in the same position and feeding a baby day after day without having the right posture can end up causing back and shoulder pain. Look for a breastfeeding pillow that has an ergonomic design and will allow you to sit comfortably. You want something that will ease the pressure on your back and shoulders so you can relax those muscles while feeding.

Feeding multiples

If you are having twins, you will need a breastfeeding pillow that will support you to feed both of your babies. Not all breastfeeding pillows are designed for multiples, so do your research on which ones can accommodate two babies. A twin feeding pillow will usually be larger than a regular feeding pillow and wrap further around your body to allow you to have a baby on each side while you are feeding.

Price

You may only use your breastfeeding pillow for the first weeks or perhaps months of breastfeeding, so consider how much you are willing to pay for a short-term product. Some breastfeeding pillows may have multiple uses, so think about that when considering the price. Weigh up the benefits of the breastfeeding pillow against the cost to determine if it’s good value.
