Unlike a manual breast pump, an electric breast pump does all the work for you. You simply attach the suction cups (flanges) to your breasts, and the pump gets to work. Here is what to look for when choosing the right electric breast pump for you.

Double or single

With a single breast pump, you can only express milk from one breast at a time, while with a double breast pump, you can express milk from both breasts at the same time. A double electric breast pump will generally cost more than a single one, but it has the benefit of allowing you to express the milk quicker. A double breast pump is ideal if you are returning to work and will be expressing at work as you can get the job done faster!

Portability

While manual breast pumps are highly portable, not all electric breast pumps offer the same flexibility. Many electric options need to be plugged into a wall socket to use, and they are generally larger and bulkier. However, some do come with a rechargeable battery for use on the go.

A portable electric breast pump is ideal for travel, using at work or when you’re out and about and electricity might not be available. These options are bulkier than manual breast pumps but not as large as standard electric options.

Suction

When it comes to expressing milk, suction is highly important! The more efficient your breast pump is at removing the milk from your breast, the faster the process will be, giving you more time to get on with life’s other tasks. There are two elements to suction – the first is a lower, faster suction that encourages your letdown in the same way a baby would. The second is a higher suction that extracts the milk from the breast.

Look for a breast pump that has both a letdown mode and allows you to adjust the suction strength fr your comfort.

Flange size

The flange of a breast pump is the suction cup that sits over your breast to extract the milk. It may not seem important, but having the correct flange size is a vital part of having the electric breast pump operate efficiently and effectively. Look for a breast pump that offers different flange sizes (usually measured on the size of your nipple area).

Additional features

A few other considerations for electric breast pumps are:

  • How noisy is the breast pump while it is in use?
  • Is it a hospital-grade breast pump (i.e. is it designed for long-term, heavy-duty usage)?
  • Does the pump have a closed system to prevent milk particles from getting into the pump motor?
  • Are the bottles that attach to the breast pump suitable for your baby, or will you need to buy other bottles? Does the pump come with adaptors so you can use your preferred bottles?
