Setting up a safe sleeping environment for your newborn is vital.

While Red Nose says that co-sleeping in a bed isn’t safe, they do recommend room sharing – this is where the baby sleeps safely in a co-sleeper or cot next to the bed – for the first six to 12 months.

So which co-sleeper is right for you?

The Tell Me Baby community has rated the safest co-sleepers they’ve tried and shared their opinions on what has, or hasn’t, worked for them.

Based on their co-sleeper reviews, we’ve put together a list of the safest co-sleepers our community loves. You can also look at out best baby bassinet comparisons to find the top rated products.

The Babyhood Australia Co Sleeper Cradle can be used as a cradle, co-sleeper or bassinet – whatever suits you. Featuring mesh sides, wheels and drop-down side, this product comes highly recommended by parents.

“I was looking for two things in a bassinet – wheels and a drop-down side, and there is not currently much like this on the market,” said a parent. “The babyhood bassinet was a great investment and has both of those mentioned above.”

Safety standards

The most important thing for parents to be aware of when searching for the safest co-sleepers is that there are no Australian safety standards for baby bassinets or bedside sleepers.

CHOICE says that some “products claim compliance with the older standard for rocking cradles AS/NZS 4385:1996. Other standards to look out for that manufacturers tend to have their bassinets tested to include:

  • the European standard EN 1130
  • the US standard ASTM F2194.”
