7 things mums need to hear right now

Share it

Being a parent is hard sometimes. Yes, it’s rewarding, but every so often you get a day that just stinks!

When I’m in the midst of a stinker, I know I can fire off an SOS text message, venting about whatever parenting fail has just happened. It doesn’t take long before my mum friends make me feel better.

If, like me, you’re in the middle of a crappy week, you might need this little reminder: no matter how deflated you’re feeling, you are a great mum and you’re doing an excellent job.

To keep the good vibes going, here are 7 more things your amazing mum friends would tell you right now.

So listen up!

1. “I know how you feel”

Sleep deprivation, poo explosions, public tantrums, did we say sleep-deprivation? Your mum friends are in the trenches with you. They really do know how you feel. And for some reason, knowing you aren’t alone is oddly satisfying.

2. “Whatever works!”

Whether it’s using the iPad to entertain your toddler while you have an adult conversation, or rocking your baby to sleep every night, if it works for you, that’s the only thing that matters.

3. “You can do this!”

Unfortunately, there’s no handbook for being a parent. Many of us are winging it on a daily basis. Sometimes, feeling like you have no idea what you’re doing can feel very overwhelming. But the truth is, all your kids need is love and to feel safe. You are doing a great job!

4. “Trust your ‘mum gut'”

You know your child better than ANYONE. So when unsolicited advice comes your way, and the little bits of doubt creep into your mind, ignore them. Your ‘mum gut’ will always know the right thing to do for you and your child.

5. “I can help you”

Sure, they might be trying to wrangle two toddlers and a newborn, but if you need help, your mum friends will offer. We are in this together. And besides, they know you’ll return the favour someday.

6. “Who needs sleep anyway?”

Can’t remember the last time you slept more than 3 hours in a row? Me either. Despite adults needing between 7-9 hours of sleep a night to function properly (HA! HA!), you are doing it all on much less. Basically, you’re a superhero!

7. “You deserve a break”

If you feel like you need a break, but you also feel guilty about needing a break – don’t! You deserve it! And your little kids will love their restored energy when you return home for cuddles.
