Multiple sunscreens have been recalled after low levels of a potentially cancer-causing chemical were detected in them.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration issued the recall notice for nine batches of sunscreens across 10 products due to the presence of benzene, a human carcinogen depending on the level and extent of exposure.
“Benzene is not an ingredient in sunscreens but can be a contaminant in raw materials used in the manufacturing process,” the TGA said.
“It has been detected in one batch of a raw material used in the manufacture of a number of products and the TGA is working with affected companies to confirm if benzene is present in their medicines and, if it is, how much is there.”
Last year three Banana Boat sunscreens were recalled for the same reason, as well as a Neutrogena sunscreen spray.
Other products may be added to the recall in the next few weeks as TGA investigations continue.
