If you’re new to the nappy-buying game, choosing the right can feel overwhelming. We’ve put together a nappy guide to help you decide on the best nappy for your baby.
Disposable nappies are a fitted type of nappy that are used once and thrown away. They have a plastic, waterproof outer layer to prevent leaks and an absorbent inner layer that keeps your baby dry. This absorbent layer can be up of materials like wood pulp, bamboo or fabric and usually contains a chemical crystal called SAP (super absorbent polymer).
Nappies have come a long way since we were babies. If you are worried about the environment, biodegradable nappies and compostable nappies are an option.
According to this article, nappies made with higher amounts of biodegradable materials break down into smaller pieces, eventually. On the other hand, compostable nappies break down into organic materials that become nutrients in the soil. Both of these nappies are usually organic and eco-friendly, which means they contain fewer chemicals and are safer for baby’s skin.
Shop nappies and disposable systems.
When choosing the best newborn nappy, consider the size, price and comfort before buying. It may take some trial and error, but it won’t be long before you settle on a favourite brand. Read newborn nappy reviews from other parents.
Premmie nappies are designed to meet the needs of premature babies. Something many parents don’t realise is that premmie nappies are a great option for newborns who aren’t born prematurely, but who are born on the smaller side.
You can look at our newborn nappy comparisons to find out the top rated products others parents love.
Also known as swim nappies, waterproof nappies are available as a disposable nappy that doesn’t hold water. Another option is reusable swim nappies that are made from bathing suit material – these let the urine pass through but should contain solids.
Cloth nappies come in two types: flats and pre-folds – these are the cheapest option when it comes to buying reusable nappies, but they do require a nappy cover. Made from cotton, bamboo or hemp, cloth nappies are absorbent and easy to wash.
Modern cloth nappies, also known as MCNs, are a little easier to use than flats and pre-folds, especially when you’re trying to change a nappy in an awkward situation. They cost a bit more upfront but come in a broader range of colours, patterns and materials. Washing instructions may vary depending on the brand.
Some parents choose to use a combination of the two – flats and pre-folds while they’re at home and MCNs when they’re out. Read our best reusable nappy guide to find out which reusable nappies other parents use.
There’s no wrong answer when deciding on a nappy – the decision is entirely yours (and your baby’s!).
We recommend writing a list of what is important to you in a nappy – this could include things like style, absorbance, chemicals, price, reusable, disposable etc.
Once you have your list, you can start your search – crossing off anything that doesn’t meet your requirements. Read our best nappy comparisons to find the top nappies other parents have rated.
Check each brand’s size guide to ensure you’re buying the right size nappies.
Signs that it’s time to move into a larger nappy size could include:
