Looking for the best formula for constipation? We get it, watching your little one in pain is tough. But before making the switch, there are few things you can check first.

Constipation in babies

Before trying anything, parents need to work out if their baby is actually constipated.

While formula-fed babies are prone to constipation, irregular bowel movements aren’t necessarily a sign your baby is constipated. It might seem odd, but bowel movements can differ from baby to baby.

For example, the Raising Children Network says, “Breastfed babies might poo up to five times a day, or only once every five days. Their poo is soft and yellow or mustard coloured.

As for formula-fed babies, they “usually poo 1-2 times per day. Their poo is firmer and more green-brown,” they say.

So, if your baby has irregular bowl movements, but their poo is still pretty soft – they may not be constipated.

Additionally, a baby going red in the face while pooing is also normal.

Signs of constipation in babies

Some tell-tale signs your baby is constipated include:

  • passing hard and pellet-like poo
  • seeming distressed and in pain
  • having a hard belly.

Remember: if your baby is showing signs of constipation, make an appointment with your GP.
