Nappy guide: how to choose the right nappy for your baby

If you’re new to the nappy-buying game, choosing the right can feel overwhelming. We’ve put together a nappy guide to help you decide on the best nappy for your baby.
Disposable nappies
Disposable nappies are a fitted type of nappy that are used once and thrown away. They have a plastic, waterproof outer layer to prevent leaks and an absorbent inner layer that keeps your baby dry. This absorbent layer can be up of materials like wood pulp, bamboo or fabric and usually contains a chemical crystal called SAP (super absorbent polymer).
Biodegradable and compostable nappies
Nappies have come a long way since we were babies. If you are worried about the environment, biodegradable nappies and compostable nappies are an option.

On the other hand, compostable nappies break down into organic materials that become nutrients in the soil. Waterproof nappies
Also known as swim nappies, waterproof nappies are available as a disposable nappy that doesn’t hold water. Another option is reusable swim nappies that are made from bathing suit material – these let the urine pass through but should contain solids.
Reusable nappies
Cloth nappies
Cloth nappies come in two types: flats and pre-folds – these are the cheapest option when it comes to buying reusable nappies, but they do require a nappy cover. Made from cotton, bamboo or hemp, cloth nappies are absorbent and easy to wash.
Modern cloth nappies (MCNs)
Modern cloth nappies, also known as MCNs, are a little easier to use than flats and pre-folds, especially when you’re trying to change a nappy in an awkward situation. They cost a bit more upfront but come in a broader range of colours, patterns and materials. Washing instructions may vary depending on the brand.

How to choose a nappy for your baby
There’s no wrong answer when deciding on a nappy – the decision is entirely yours (and your baby’s!).

Signs that it’s time to move into a larger nappy size could include:
- feeling tight around the waist and thighs – keep an eye out for red marks on the skin
- the nappy not covering your baby’s bottom
- the nappy is soaked through easily or quickly.
