Whether it’s a ten minute trip to the shops or a five hour car journey to a holiday destination, a family road trip can be a challenge for many parents.

Let’s face it, being stuck in a cramped space with little entertainment and no concept of time is not much fun for kids either. We can all think back to the “are we nearly there yet?” cries from our own childhood.

If you’re about to embark on a family road trip, we have some tips to help you survive it. The aim is to keep the kids happy and entertained. Then the whole family can relax and look forward to reaching their destination with as little fuss, tears and cries of “I’m bored!” as possible.

Here are our 5 tips for a better Family Road Trip:

5 tips for a better Family Road Trip

1. Plan for Success

If your time-frame allows, it, plan your journey to coincide with your child’s regular routine.

Sometimes, if you can travel when your baby or toddler usually takes a nap, it’s often a simple way to get them to sleep on the go instead. It certainly can make for a more peaceful journey for parents.

If you’re going to be travelling at the times when your child would usually eat, plan ahead. Find some family friendly spots on the map in advance: perhaps a café or a picnic area. Knowing in advance where you will stop gives you all something to look forward to. It also takes the stress out of trying to find somewhere on the day.

Get a good night’s sleep yourself before the journey to ensure you’re well rested as you drive.

2. Pack a Snack

We’ve all heard “I’m hungry!” pleas calling out from the backseat on a car journey! Stock up on drinks and travel snacks that your child can munch on if you’re travelling between meals.

When you stop to stretch your legs, or for a bathroom break, a piece of fruit or a snack should be enough to tide them over until their next meal.

Kiddylicious has a deliciously yummy range of tasty snacks for babies and toddlers. They take the finest ingredients and transform them into delicious snacks for younger children.

Fruit Wriggles are a perfect, mess-free snack for a family road trip. They’re made from juicy fruit that is magically whizzed into wriggles that occupy little fingers!

3. Stock up on Supplies

Cover every eventuality by having a bag at your feet with the main supplies your children might need.

It might be baby wipes, a first aid kit, a change of clothes or a towel. Having emergency items at your fingertips will help keep the car journey moving and solve mini hitches on-the-go.

Don’t forget to pack a couple of plastic bags to gather any dirty clothes or rubbish in one place to keep the car clean as you travel.

4. Bust the Boredom

Depending on the length of your car journey, or the age of your child, you’ll want to have a few entertaining tricks up your sleeve.

Older kids might settle well with a tablet or portable DVD player for a quiet couple of hours while they watch their favourite movie.

An audio book is another great option for families that love to read and babies can often drift off to the sound of nursery rhymes.

5. Don’t forget the fun!

Whether your journey is short or long, try to make the most of it.

Point out interesting land marks and take your family’s mind off the fact that you’re stuck in the car.

A game of “I spy” is a great way to get your children to take an interest in their surroundings and to keep them entertained along the way.

The more you plan ahead before your trip, the more likely that the journey itself will go well.
