Buying shoes for your toddler or child who has autism can be a struggle. As parents of children with sensory processing difficulties know, finding the right pair of shoes can sometimes feel like you’re chasing that elusive pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
That’s where Vans comes in. Ahead of Autism Awareness Month in April, Vans is releasing a collection of sensory-inclusive sneakers and clothing for adults, children and toddlers.
“Since 1966, Vans has stood as a champion of individuality and self-expression. The brand’s commitment continues with the release of sensory inclusive footwear designs as part of the Autism Awareness Collection,” Vans announced in a press release.
Working with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, Vans designed the collection of sneakers and clothing using calming colours and designs that focus on touch, sight and sound.
Conveniently, most of the shoes are designed as a slip-on. One style features a single-strap hook-and-loop closure so that kids can adjust their shoe tightness.
They are also fitted with Vans ComfyCush technology, making them comfortable for everyday wear.
But that’s not all. Vans will donate a minimum of $100,000 of its profits to A.skate, an organisation that allows children with autism to be a part of the social world through skateboarding.
While we don’t know exactly when this range will be available, Vans has said sometime this month. It’s likely they will be available on the US Vans site first, but we’re hoping they’ll appear in the Australian Vans shop too.
For those who can’t wait, Australia Post offers a parcel forwarding service, ShopMate, so Aussies can shop in the online in the US.
