Mum’s 6.3kg baby surprise: “I would do it all over again if I had to”

Cary and Tim Patonai were expecting their third child, and had already been told their baby was going to be unusually big, possibly weighing 6.25kg.

This was news enough: the average weight for a newborn baby is approximately 3.4kg, and anywhere between 2.49kg and 4.5kg is considered a normal weight.

So you can imagine their reaction when their baby boy, Finnley, arrived at a massive 6.37kg.

The couple are already parents to Devlen, 10, and Everett, 2, who were born at 3.72kg and 5.04kg respectively. “But Finnley took the lead,” Cary told Fox News. Meanwhile, the doctor, who delivered all three babies, said that Finnley was the biggest he had delivered in 27 years.

“He was so big plus I had almost double the amniotic fluid, so to say I had a big baby belly and that I was absolutely completely uncomfortable isn’t enough,” Cary said in the interview. “However, I would do it all over again if I had to, to get this blessing.”

A surprising birth

Cary was scheduled for a C-section at 38 weeks, on October 5th, however it rapidly got moved forward when her waters broke the day before, just as she was being weighed at her last appointment. Later that day, at the Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona, Cary gave birth to Finnley.

The baby boy had to spend eight days in the NICU, which was a challenge for Cary. Due to a blood clotting disorder and fibroids, she had previously experienced 19 miscarriages. “I knew it was for a good cause and he was in excellent care, but it still was extremely hard for me to emotionally handle,” she said.

A (not so) little celebrity

Finnley and his extraordinary size proved a hit, not only with the doctor who delivered him, but with most of the hospital staff. “Finnley was a little celebrity at the hospital,” said Cary. “Nurses and doctors were non-stop talking about him. He is quite tall too at 23.75 inches (60cm).”

“As soon as they pulled him out, they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s huge!’” she said, according to The Sun. “Everybody was freaking out, like, ‘I’ve never seen a baby that big, I can’t believe it.’ So perfect and round in every way. He’s definitely my squishy little honey bear.”

The hospital had to put in a special order for bigger nappies and the family had to go out and buy bigger clothes as nothing would fit him. Cary and Tim had stocked up on clothes for a baby aged zero to three months, however Finnley jumped straight into clothes for a six to nine-month-old. “I wanted him to fit in the clothes we had saved from his other two brothers,” Cary said. “But everything we had was entirely too small.”

Finnley’s size may have been more than they bargained for, but his parents are just so thrilled to meet him and to finally be a family of five. “He is such a good sweet baby,” said Cary. “I am so grateful everything ended on such a great positive side.”
