Are teething products safe for babies and toddlers?

Teething is something everyone goes through, but that doesn’t make it any easier for parents to watch their children in pain. Purchasing teething products can help to ease some of the discomfort your baby might be feeling. But are they safe?

The thing with teething is that it does not happen at the same time for all children. Usually, babies start teething at around six months and can take two or three years for all of their teeth to come through. For this reason, it’s essential for parents to carefully read the package and take note of the age recommendations for teething products they purchase. What’s safe for a toddler, might not be for a baby.

Shop teething products.

Teething gels

The current health advice is that teething gels should not be used for babies. Why? Because it’s easy to apply too much gel without realising, which can cause severe and sometimes fatal side-effects. Read the ingredients list carefully before using teething gels. Amber teething gels and homoeopathic teething tablets should also be avoided.

Teething toys and rings

To ease your baby’s teething discomfort, parents can try washing their hands and rubbing their gums. Wetting a clean washer and cooling it in the fridge (not freezing it) can also help ease aches and pains.

A range of teeth toys and rings are available to purchase too. Before buying anything remember that the teething toy or ring will end up in your baby’s mouth, so make sure there are no nasties. Look for products that are made from:

  • 100% natural rubber
  • 100% organic cotton
  • Food-grade silicone
  • Food-grade safe plastics
  • Untreated natural hardwood

If you are concerned about your baby’s teething, contact your GP or other health professional.
