Keeping your baby calm and happy is the goal for all parents, and one way to help achieve that is by swaddling.
It’s thought the feeling of being swaddled is similar to how a baby feels in the womb, helping to keep them calm. Not to mention, babies’ sleep reflexes mean they can often wake themselves up during the night, which is the last thing anyone wants.
No, swaddling is not essential. In fact, not all babies will enjoy the feeling of being swaddled. All babies are different, so if your newborn doesn’t seem to be enjoying it, stop swaddling.
The cost of swaddles varies, depending on what you are after. But you can expect to spend anywhere between $10 and $90 for a wrap or swaddle bag.
Parents should stop swaddling their baby once they start showing signs of rolling over (around three to four months – or sooner). Never wrap your baby if they are sharing a sleep surface with another person.
When purchasing a wrap to swaddle your baby, make sure the material is lightweight and breathable – cotton and bamboo are both good choices. Rugs and blankets are not safe for swaddling as they may cause overheating. Importantly, make sure you know how to swaddle your baby safely.
If you aren’t confident about securely wrapping your baby, zip swaddles are a great alternative, especially for babies who like to sleep with their arms up.
Once your baby is old enough, you can transition them into an arms-free sleeping bag. According to Red Nose, using a safe sleeping bag – one with a fitted neck and armholes, no hood and is the correct size for baby – has lots of benefits, like promoting back sleeping, regulating temperature and reducing the risk of bedding covering a baby’s face.
TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade. In Australia, TOG ratings range from 0.2 to 3.5, with the lower-rated bags used in warmer weather, and higher-rated bags used in colder weather.
Remember though, babies control their own temperature through their face and head, so the best things parents can to do avoid their baby from overheating to leave their face and head uncovered.
However, most companies provide the ratings to help parents choose appropriate sleepwear for their baby, which can be very handy.
Before hitting the check out with your baby’s brand new swaddle, make sure it allows for the natural development of the hip joints. One way of finding this out is to see if it’s certified hip-healthy by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.
