Winter Baby Checklist

There are a few key areas where you might need to make changes:

1. Clothing

Days, and especially nights, might grow a lot cooler where you are. Whether you’re out and about with your baby or settling them to sleep in the nursery, you might like to invest in warmer clothing or layers.

Layers work well because you can remove or add more depending on the temperature. A little less fuss for your baby and you!

Onesies and sleeping bags with feet can also be worth the investment to keep their tootsies warm.

Hats, mittens and baby booties can keep your bub from losing heat from their extremities.

If you need ideas on how to dress a baby in winter, our checklist covers the essential items that can be layered up.

2. Bedding

Keep a check on the temperature of your baby or toddler’s nursery during winter. You might consider a warmer blanket, sleeping bag or swaddle to keep them snug.

Ensure that they do not get risk over-heating though and we love this guide from Red Nose on how to make sure your baby’s sleep environment is right.

3. Eating

For many parents, winter means warm and comforting meals. Healthy winter food for babies on solids can include cooked veggies either as purees or as finger food for those doing baby led weaning.

4. Health checks

If your baby has the sniffles, or you want to protect them from getting them, speak to your GP about the flu vaccine for babies. They can also let you know what flu symptoms in babies to look out for.

Keep a first aid medical kit at home with the essentials to keep your baby’s health in check such as a thermometer to check their temperature.

A humidifier in the nursery can counteract dry air and the right baby skincare products will keep their skin from drying out in colder temperatures. Remember that sunscreen is essential all year around.

5. Bath-time

As adults, we all loathe that feeling of jumping out of the shower or bath to a cold bathroom! Same goes for babies.

Ensure your bathroom is adequately heated so that they’re comfortable during and after their bath.

Bathing baby during winter can still be fun! Check out these bath-time toys and which ones our community rates the most.

6. Out and About

Just because it’s colder outside, doesn’t mean you and your little one can’t go on adventures!

Keep your baby warm in the pram or stroller by wrapping them in warmer clothes, a blanket and a foot muff. You can find suggestions for pram accessories here.

A rain cover will protect your pram and it’s precious cargo too and one for your capsule can keep them dry during transfers from home to car.
