When buying a pram for the first time, it can be hard to know where to start. You can imagine the family strolls, shopping trips and fun days out you and your little one are going to have using the pram in the years ahead, but which option will be easiest and most comfortable to use? And have all the features you need? And fit your budget?
To help you get started, we asked our community of parents what they wish they’d known when they were shopping for their first pram. Here are their top tips.
“A great place to start when looking for a pram is to write down a list of features you need and go from there,” said one mum. For example, do you need something that can handle the lumps and bumps of a rougher terrain, or will you be sticking to smooth footpaths? How big do you need the storage basket to be? Which way do you want your baby facing? If a pram doesn’t tick all of your boxes, move on to something else.

It’s no secret that being a parent requires lots of multi-tasking, so having a spare hand is essential. As a result, lots of parents in the Tell Me Baby community stressed the importance of being able to push a pram one handed.
“Find something that you can push with one hand and is super easy to get up/down and in and out of the car,” said one parent.
Pram weight was a point that popped up a lot from other parents.
“Don’t get one that is heavy. You will be lifting it in and out of the car sometimes 5 times a day for nearly 2 years,” said one mum. And she’s got a point.
An excellent lightweight option is the everyday multi terrain pram the Bugaboo Lynx. It weighs in at only 9.4 kgs, making it perfect for parents who need to lift their pram in and out of the car or up and down stairs daily.
There’s nothing more disappointing than selecting a pram only to find out it doesn’t fit in your boot. If your pram does fit, is there room for anything else, like your weekly food shop?
If buying your pram in store, ask the salesperson if you can quickly duck out to the carpark with a demo model and see for yourself if the pram fits. Practice lifting it in and out a few times as well to see how the weight feels.
Asking around is a great strategy when choosing a pram. Just remember to do your own research too – what works for one family might not necessarily work for yours. (And remember to check out the pram reviews on Tell Me Baby!)
“Do your own research. And think about what you’ll use it for and what features you actually need,” said one parent.
Another added: “If you live on a farm or do lots of bush walks, you’ll need a different pram than someone who lives in an apartment or wants to navigate easily around shops.”
The tried and tested pram that’s been around more than a decade, Bugaboo Cameleon 3 plus offers all the practical features parents know and love, lightweight, adjustable suspension and a redesigned underseat basket for easier access.
Prams have come a long way and so have the accessories that go with them. Some will be a dealbreaker for you (water bottle holder? Phone holder?), and others, not so much. The good news is that many can be added later if you change your mind.
Choose a brand with loads of accessories to meet your needs: summer, winter, newborn, travel and everything else in-between. Bugaboo will have you covered.
One lucky winner will be able to choose an award winning pram from Bugaboo to suit their all-terrain needs, picking between the Bugaboo Fox 2 (RRP $1799), Bugaboo Lynx (RRP $1299) and a Bugaboo Cameleon 3 PLUS (RRP $1199). To go in the draw, just enter your details below.
