“Breeding ground for mould”: how to clean your humidifier

Share it

Humidifiers are used to add moisture back into the air which may help to ease congestion.

But neglecting to clean your device regularly could lead to an increase in germs and bacteria in the air.

Janice Nolen, an indoor air specialist and assistant vice president for national policy at the American Lung Association, spoke to Time about humidifiers. She says “moist environments [like a humidifier] provide a wonderful breeding ground for mold and bacteria,” which can then be misted into the air you breathe.

So, cleaning your humidifier regularly is essential.

How often should I clean my humidifier?

Janice recommends cleaning your humidifier at least every three days, but says “every day would be better.”

While you should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning your humidifier, Janice says using plain dish washing liquid and warm water is best.

How to clean your humidifier

Based on baby humidifier reviews, Mediscan comes highly rated among our community of parents. Check your own user manual for specific advice, but as a guide the Mediscan user manual recommends the following when cleaning:

  • Body: remove the nozzle and water tank and wipe down with a cloth to remove excess water and dirt.
  • Oscillator: remove the nozzle and water tank, wipe away excess water and gently clean the oscillator with a toothbrush.
  • Water tank: remove nozzle and water tank, remove the filter cap and clean with a diluted vinegar solution. Make sure you rinse well and allow to dry completely before reassembling.

Remember: if you are using a cleaning agent, make sure you read and follow the instructions carefully.
