Non-binary names have increased in popularity and are set to dominate in 2022, particularly for boys. It certainly makes choosing a baby name easier if you can have one name that suits either gender, particularly before the birth.
However, while boys’ names have been commonly used for girls, rarely does it go the other way around (how many boys do you know with a girl name?).
But times are changing and according to Nameberry, we’ll see the rising popularity of non-binary names that were previously only ever considered choices for baby girls.
Choosing a boys’ name for a girl is certainly not new. Names such as Frankie, James, Dylan and Avery have long been popular choices for girls – just think of Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Blake Lively. But what about girls’ names being used for a boy? According to Nameberry, out of the top 100 boy names back in 2015 in Australia, not a single one was originally thought to be a traditional girls’ name.
Now, looking at the coming baby name trends for 2022, Nameberry has highlighted the growing popularity of nonbinary names for boys, many of which were only ever considered as girls’ names. People are opting for more feminine choices, with favourites ranging from goddess names like Artemis and Echo, to nature names such as Sunny, Winter and Wren and unisex names that have always been more popular for girls like Blair, Laurie and Sasha.
Here are 20 non-binary names that are growing in popularity but were usually only ever selected for girls.
