Should Kids do Chores?

Making the decision to give your kids chores is not as easy for some parents as it is for others. While one family may see chores as taking away the freedom and fun of childhood, others think long term.

The time has come for you to make the decision whether or not to assign your child some chores. You might find yourself questioning whether the benefits outweigh the time you will spend teaching them to do things. Or if you should just let them enjoy their free time while they can. Different things work for different families but here are a few factors to consider before making your decision.

Benefits of kids doing chores

Believe it or not there are many benefits to your children helping with jobs around the house. Benefits for you and them.

Starting chores young

Introducing your children to age appropriate chores will help to build their confidence and independence. Toddlers can do little things like putting their bowl in the sink, putting their toys away and even filling the toilet roll holder

These tasks may be small and quicker for you to do but by encouraging them to help you, you are preparing them for more involved tasks when they get older.

Accomplishment

When they evolve from making their bed to vacuuming or helping to dry dishes, they will feel accomplished because they have now completed a ‘big kid’ job. That feeling of satisfaction they have will only make them want to try more.

Responsibility

As children get older, they realise that chores aren’t as much fun as they once thought however making them do chores gives them responsibility. As their skills develop and they learn new abilities, you are helping to prepare them for adulthood.

Preparation for adulthood

Everything from getting an after-school job to getting their learner driver’s license requires confidence, responsibility and knowledge; and introducing chores to your kids helps them to achieve these qualities. Teaching them to cook and having them prepare a meal once a week will not only give you the night off, it will also give them skills to survive once they leave home. Same goes for doing laundry.

Self-care tasks like dressing themselves, brushing their teeth and doing up their buttons is the first step to independence. Encourage this and implement age appropriate chores and watch as their confidence and independence grows.

Kids who do chores are learning life skills that will help them to be self-reliant and confident adults in the future.
