Tips for Introducing Solid Foods to Your Baby

Introducing solid foods to your baby is an exciting milestone, but it can also be overwhelming for parents. When should you start offering solid foods? What foods should you introduce first? How can you ensure your baby is getting the nutrition they need? Here are some tips to help make the transition to solid foods as smooth as possible.

When to Start Introducing Solid Foods

In Australia, it is recommended to start introducing solid foods between 4-6 months of age. Signs that your baby is ready for solids include:

It’s important to note that every baby is different, so it’s best to consult with your pediatrician or child health nurse before starting solids.

What Foods to Offer First

When introducing solid foods, it’s best to start with single-ingredient purees of fruits or vegetables. Some good options include:

Introduce one new food at a time and wait a few days before introducing another new food. This can help you identify any food allergies or intolerances your baby may have.

How to Introduce Solid Foods

When introducing solid foods, it’s important to start slowly and gradually increase the amount and frequency of feedings. Here are some tips to help make the process easier:

  1. Start with a small amount: Offer your baby a small amount of pureed food on a spoon or your finger.
  2. Follow your baby’s cues: Pay attention to your baby’s cues and stop feeding when they show signs of being full, such as turning their head away or closing their mouth.
  3. Offer breast milk or formula first: Continue to offer breast milk or formula before offering solid foods until your baby is eating a significant amount of solid foods.
  4. Be patient: It can take several attempts for your baby to accept a new food. Keep offering it and try different ways of preparing it.

Handling Food Allergies

Food allergies can be a concern when introducing solid foods. The most common food allergens include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish. Here are some tips for handling food allergies:

  1. Introduce one new food at a time: This can help you identify which foods your baby may be allergic to.
  2. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction: Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include hives, swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, and difficulty breathing. If you suspect your baby is having an allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately.
  3. Talk to your pediatrician or child health nurse: If you have a family history of food allergies or your baby has eczema, talk to your pediatrician or child health nurse before introducing solid foods.

Introducing solid foods to your baby can be a fun and exciting time. By following these tips, you can help ensure a smooth transition and promote healthy eating habits for your little one.

Mums review the Tommee Tippee Dreamsense Smart Baby Monitor

As a parent, one of the most important things you can do is ensure the safety and well-being of your child, especially when they are sleeping. That’s where the Tommee Tippee Dreamsense Smart Baby Monitor comes in. This innovative baby monitor uses advanced technology to help you keep an eye on your little one, even when you’re not in the same room.

The Tommee Tippee Dreamsense Smart Baby Monitor features a high-definition video camera that lets you see your baby in real time. The camera can pan, tilt, and zoom, so you can get a clear view of your baby from any angle. The camera also features infrared night vision, which means you can see your baby even in complete darkness.

We asked two mums from the Tell Me Baby community to try out and review the Dreamsense. Read on or watch the video below to find out what they thought.

The Dreamsense Smart Baby Monitor does more than just let you see your baby. It also uses advanced algorithms to track your baby’s movements and breathing patterns. If the monitor detects any irregularities in your baby’s breathing, it will send an alert to your smartphone. This feature can provide parents with extra peace of mind, especially for babies who may be at a higher risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

The monitor also has a temperature sensor that measures the temperature in your baby’s room. You can set the temperature range for the monitor to notify you when it’s too hot or too cold. This feature is especially helpful during the winter months or in areas with extreme temperatures.

The Dreamsense Smart Baby Monitor also has a two-way communication feature. This allows you to talk to your baby through the monitor, even when you’re not in the same room.

The monitor comes with a free app that you can download on your smartphone. The app allows you to control the monitor, view the video feed, and receive alerts. The app also lets you customize the settings, so you can adjust the sensitivity of the breathing and movement tracking.

What our reviewers thought of the Tommee Tippee Dreamsense Smart Baby Monitor:

Bethany T:

Setting up the Dreamsense was made super easy as it comes with a step-by-step instruction booklet. This is fantastic for someone who is not very tech savvy like myself. At first like most new tech, it took some getting used to and I was unsure what settings to put at what levels of sensitivity. The size of the camera and functionality are fantastic. I was able to angle the camera at the angle needed to be able to view the whole cot. This is something I have struggled with previously with other cameras.

I love that I have set the camera up in his room up stairs and can go down in the kitchen and prepare meals or do washing, whilst still having access to seeing him through the app and the ability to hear if he stirs without having to walk upstairs constantly.

Cameron & Abi R. – Infant system

We found that all the items that come in the box for this monitor were well manufactured and it felt like Tommee Tippee used quality materials. When setting up the Monitor, the Tommee Tippee app was very user friendly and easy to navigate for both the setup of the camera and the functions on the app. The camera had a very clear picture with a wide lens that could see the whole cot and the surrounds, and the angle of the camera is easily adjustable. The room temperature, humidity and environmental noise sensors in the app were very handy and can be adjusted to your specifications. The app sends notifications when baby makes noises or if your temperature/humidity settings were reached and you can review the footage through the app.

The monitor comes with a parent pod which emits sounds and lights up if baby makes noises, allowing for a quick glimpse at what is happening in baby’s room without needing to constantly be glued to your phone screen or hindering the regular use of your phone. We really enjoyed that the parent pod had a day/night function for the lights as well and the lights and sounds being adjustable directly on the bottom of the parent pod. The parent pod also fits in your pocket, perfect for moving from room to room.

Playing with Purpose: The Importance of Baby Toys for Learning and Development

Baby toys can play a crucial role in a child’s learning and development. They help babies to learn about the world around them, develop essential skills, and provide a source of entertainment and comfort. Here are some types of baby toys that can aid in learning and development:

  1. Sensory Toys: Sensory toys are designed to stimulate the senses and encourage exploration. They come in different shapes, textures, and colours to encourage babies to touch, feel, and explore.
  2. Musical Toys: Musical toys can help develop a baby’s auditory skills and enhance their understanding of rhythm and melody. They can be as simple as a rattle or as complex as a musical instrument.
  3. Interactive Toys: Interactive toys encourage babies to engage with the world around them. They can be as simple as a peek-a-boo game or as complex as a toy that responds to touch and movement.
  4. Educational Toys: Educational toys are designed to teach babies new concepts and skills. They can include puzzles, stacking toys, and shape sorters.
  5. Language Development Toys: Language development toys help babies to learn new words and concepts. They can include books, flashcards, and toys that make sounds when a button is pressed.
  6. Gross Motor Toys: Gross motor toys encourage babies to develop their large muscle groups, such as their arms and legs. They can include balls, push toys, and ride-on toys.
  7. Fine Motor Toys: Fine motor toys help babies to develop their small muscle groups, such as their fingers and hands. They can include toys that require grasping and manipulating, such as blocks or stacking rings.

It’s important to choose baby toys that are appropriate for their age and developmental stage. Always check the manufacturer’s age recommendation before purchasing a toy. Additionally, it’s important to supervise babies while they play with toys to ensure their safety.

Remember that babies learn best through play, so providing them with toys that are engaging and stimulating can help promote their learning and development.

How to choose the right car seat for your baby

Image: Britax Australia

As a parent, your child’s safety is always your top priority. This is especially true when it comes to driving with your little one. A car seat is an essential piece of equipment that can help protect your baby in the event of a collision. But with so many options available, how do you choose the right car seat for your baby? Here’s an overview of the different types of car seats available and what to look for when choosing one for your little one.

Types of Car Seats

There are three main types of car seats available: infant car seats, convertible car seats, and booster seats.

  1. Infant Car Seats: Infant car seats are designed for babies who weigh up to 13kg and are usually rear-facing. They are designed to be used from birth until your baby outgrows them, which typically occurs when they reach around one year of age.
  2. Convertible Car Seats: Convertible car seats can be used both rear-facing and forward-facing, making them a more versatile option. They are designed for babies who weigh up to 18kg and can be used from birth until your child outgrows them, which can be up to around four years of age.
  3. Booster Seats: Booster seats are designed for children who have outgrown their convertible car seat but are not yet big enough to use a seat belt alone. They are usually used from around four years of age and can be used until your child is around 12 years old.

Britax were the winners of Best Baby Capsule and Best Convertible Car Seat in this year’s Tell Me Baby awards. (see the full winners list here).

What to Look For

When choosing a car seat for your baby, there are several factors to consider, including:

  1. Safety Features: Look for a car seat that has been tested and meets Australian safety standards. Features such as a five-point harness, side-impact protection, and energy-absorbing foam can also help to keep your baby safe in the event of a collision.
  2. Ease of Use: A car seat that is easy to install and adjust can make your life a lot easier. Look for features such as a simple harness system and easy-to-use buckles.
  3. Comfort: Your baby will likely spend a lot of time in their car seat, so it’s important to choose one that is comfortable. Look for a car seat with a soft and padded seat, as well as adjustable head and body support.
  4. Size: Make sure that the car seat you choose fits in your car and is appropriate for your baby’s weight and height.
  5. Price: Car seats can vary greatly in price, so it’s important to choose one that fits within your budget. However, remember that the most expensive option isn’t always the safest, so it’s important to choose a car seat that meets your needs and your budget.

In conclusion, choosing the right car seat for your baby is essential for their safety when travelling by car. Consider the different types of car seats available, as well as factors such as safety features, ease of use, comfort, size, and price when making your decision. With the right car seat, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that your little one is safe and secure while travelling.

Mums review the ergoPouch Sleep System

It’s no secret that sleep (or lack thereof) in the first five years is a difficult journey full of challenges. When preparing for a newborn or caring for your infant or toddler, some of the most important decisions you’ll need to make are about sleep safety and comfort.

ergoPouch, Australia’s leading brand in baby sleepwear, sleeping pouches and sleep tools help take the guesswork out of making sleep-safe decisions for your child. With a range spanning from Newborn to 6 years old, ergoPouch products provide peace of mind and help you navigate the more difficult phases of your child’s sleep journey.

Whether you’re a new parent or growing a family, ergoPouch sleep systems are a great investment that will last several years and across several children.

We asked three mums from the Tell Me Baby community to review products from the sleep system in the Newborn, Infant and Toddler ranges. Read on or watch the video below to find out what they thought.

Newborn Range

The Cocoon Swaddle Bag is ergoPouch’s most popular sleepwear item for newborns. It’s designed to be easy to use and difficult to escape from, as well as providing comfort and safety to keep your baby snug and secure. The swaddle is made from natural fibres and can be used at room temperatures between 21-24°C without the requirement for blankets in the cot – making this a safe sleep option.

The Long Sleeve Layer is designed to be worn as a pyjama layer underneath other ergoPouch products such as swaddles, sleeping bags or onesies. The layer is made from organic jersey cotton, TOG-rated for warmth and provides stretch for comfort during sleep. The breathable natural fibres prevent overheating while being ideal for cooler nights when you need a little extra warmth under the pouch.

The Baby Tuck Sheet is a safe, suitable from birth alternative to a baby blanket. Made from breathable organic cotton and bamboo, the sheet is a firm fitting mattress sleeve providing extra security and comfort for your newborn. It can’t become untucked from the mattress underneath and has been approved by leading independent infant safety organisation INPAA.

Infant Range

The Jersey Sleeping Bag is designed for babies and toddlers who are ‘arms out’ sleepers. The slim fitting, stretchy design is similar to a swaddle and ideal for a first sleeping bag. Made from breathable natural fibres ensuring your child’s temperature is regulated and prevents overheating. There’s no need for blankets in the cot when using this product, making it an ideal safe-sleep option.

The Long Sleeve Layer is designed to be worn as a pyjama layer underneath other ergoPouch products such as swaddles, sleeping bags or onesies. The layer is made from organic jersey cotton, providing stretch for comfort and warmth during sleep. The breathable natural fibres prevent overheating while being ideal for cooler nights when you need a little extra warmth under the pouch.

The Arm Warmers are designed for when your baby is wearing a sleeveless sleeping bag, so you can add a little warmth to their arms if the coldest hours of the night are causing them to wake. The warmers are ideal as a mid-weight layer, featuring foldover cuffs to keep their hands warm too.

Toddler Range

The Long Sleeve Pyjamas are great for when your toddler grows out of their onesies. Ideal for children who have started toilet training and learning to dress themselves due to their simplicity and separate top and bottom. The pyjamas are made from skin friendly, breathable natural fibres, ensuring temperature regulation and to avoid overheating.

The Organic Toddler Pillow is designed to support the correct alignment of the neck during sleep, suitable from 2 years. The breathable organic cotton prevents your child from getting sweaty during the night, and non-toxic certification means they won’t be breathing any harmful chemicals during sleep.

The Sleep Suit Bag converts from a Sleeping Bag to a Sleep Suit using a 4-way zipper system. Made from an organic cotton outer layer for a soft, silky feel – and organic jersey cotton with stretchy sides and shoulder panels to ensure your toddler can move easily for a tangle-free sleep.

What our reviewers thought of the ergoPouch sleep system:

Nehah M. – NewBorn system

ergoPouch Cocoon Swaddle Bag 1.0 Tog

This swaddle bag has some of the great features and is so versatile. The bag is made of the softest material and offers a little stretch but still fits snug on bub. It comes with a free room temperature and what to wear guide which helped us to layer our bub as per room temperature. This made sure bub was never too hot or cold, which is so important in those early days. As a health professional myself I am so satisfied with the design which offers healthy bone growth and bone positioning.

ergoPouch Layers Long Sleeve 0.2 Tog

The Long sleeve bodysuit has been the best bodysuit/zipsuit we own especially because we can easily pair this with our cocoon Swaddle and tuck sheet. This combo provides ultimate comfort and safety for bub. The fabric is breathable and skin friendly. You will never overheat bub if dressed properly. It feels so soft, just what children need, bamboo has that quality.

ergoPouch Baby Tuck Sheet

The new invention every newborn must own! To be honest I feel safest with a baby tuck sheet instead of tucking blankets the traditional way. The material once again is super comfortable providing a little bit of stretch, skin friendly, soft to touch our bub appears extremely happy sleeping with it on. The tuck sheet fits one end of the bassinet and only comes up mid way to the chest further creating a safe environment for bub.

Skye C. – Infant system

ergoPouch Jersey Sleeping Bag 0.2 Tog

It was super easy to use. We added this and an ergopouch onesie to our night time routine and it’s made such a difference. I feel like she wakes less at night. She went from waking 3 times to only once and that’s just only for a feed. I love the soft stretchy organic cotton, the quality is amazing and well worth the money.

ergoPouch Layers Long Sleeve 0.2 Tog

I love the soft stretchy organic cotton. The quality is amazing and well worth the money. It’s super breathable. I have used other brands that made her super sweaty and uncomfortable but this sleep onesie is so perfect for any weather as it’s easy to layer up.

ergoPouch Arm Warmers

I have been using the ergopouch baby arm warmers and they are amazing. At night I would put my baby in the ergopouch jersey sleep bag for bed time and when she would wake for her night time feed or nappy change I would check the temperature and if it has cooled down I would add the baby arm warmers. The premium organic jersey cotton is super stretchy so it’s so easy to put on even over the top of a sleep bag.

Rachel K. – Toddler system

ergoPouch Long Sleeve Pyjamas 0.2 TOG

These pyjamas are made of such a soft and luxurious material. My son gets eczema which flares up if he is overheated but he loves to wear long sleeve sleepwear so the 0.2tog rating is ideal. He is very happy wearing these to bed and would happily wear them all day too! For a 2 year old the two pieces makes changing pull-ups or nappies super quick and easy.

ergoPouch Organic Toddler Pillow

This little pillow is soft and so comfy. The low profile is a perfect in between step when a toddler is not quite ready for a proper pillow. I love that it’s machine washable, so practical for washing away dribble marks or spew marks!

ergoPouch Sleep Suit Bag 1.0 Tog

This sleeping suit is so practical for my two year old son! We have the 1.0tog in short sleeves, size 2-4 in the sage colour. He wears it as a bag for naps and overnight but often loves to keep the sleeping bag on for a while after getting up in the morning so being able to convert it into legs means he can move around the house still with the bag on.
